Joseph Edward Cook Sr. of Oregon, Ohio, passed away Saturday, August 16, 2008, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Perrysburg. Joe was born in Toledo, Ohio on March 24, 1919, to John Edward and Mary (Weinandy) Cook. He played football for Waite High School before joining the U. S. Navy. Joe proudly served aboard the USS Yorktown carrier and then enlisted in the U.S. Merchant Marines for four years during WWII. Joe retired from Sun Oil Refinery in 1981, where he had worked for 30 years. He was an avid boater and handyman. After his retirement, Joe was an active aviator flying his Cessna 172 across country. He also actively volunteered "supervising" the building of roads, bridges and buildings throughout the Toledo area. Joe was a member of Experimental Aviation Association, Chapter 582; Oregon Jerusalem Historical Society; and Sun Oil Retirees lunch group. He is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Carol Newbury Scheider Cook; sons, Joseph Jr. (Ava) of Silver Spring, MD, Robert Lewis (Diane) of Albuquerque, NM, Richard Francis of Costa Mesa, CA; stepchildren, Mark (Karen) Scheider and Betsy (Thomas) Donehoo; grand-children, Debra, Margaret, Kimberly, Kevin, Timothy, Jesper, Emily, Amy, Mandy, Scott, and great-grandchildren; brothers, Lewis (Gloria) of Santa Ana, CA, Fr. Timon (Francis) of Santa Fe, NM; many nieces, nephews and cousins. In 1970 Joe was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Phillips Cook; brothers, Fred, John; sister, Lillian; half sister, Mary; half brother, Vernon. Joe wished to support education of future doctors and nurses. He donated his body to the University of Toledo's Medical Center. In Celebration of his spirit, the family will receive friends on Monday, August 25, at the Eggleston Meinert Pavley Funeral Home Oregon Chapel, 440 S.
