Obituary

Agnes Theresa McDaniel, 90, passed away on Wednesday, December 15, 2004 in Heartland of Oregon. A lifelong east Toledo resident, Agnes was born on December 23, 1913 to John and Theresa (Stuller) Gadus, who both immigrated to this country from what is now Slovakia. Before she became a devoted wife and mother, Agnes fulfilled her duties as the oldest daughter, helping to take care of her brothers and sisters. She attended Central Catholic High School, but was unable to graduate from Central because of the Great Depression. She finished school at Waite High School graduating in 1932. She was an active volunteer, serving her parish, Holy Rosary, community, and family. Mrs. McDaniel was active in the Rosary Altar Society for over 50 years and served as first Parish Council President and one of the first lay Eucharistic Ministers. For over 20 years she volunteered for the Toledo Diocesan Council of Catholic Woman and served much of that time in leadership positions, including diocesan president, diocesan public relations chairman, Toledo Deanery president, Family Life chairperson and district president. Through her involvement in the Council she attended conferences and national conventions across the country. Agnes' extensive volunteer work for the Council of Catholic Women lead to a full time paid position as Women's Coordinator for the Toledo Diocesan Office of Pastoral Services from 1965 through 1980. She was also a member of the first board of the St. Charles Hospital Guild and was co-founder and president of the Cardinal Stritch High School Biretta Club. She was inducted into the Birmingham Hall of Fame in 1983 as a Distinguished Citizen. She was devoted to her family as they were devoted to her and she found joy in passing on religious and cultural Slovak traditions and foods.
