Obituary

Albert Peter Rajner Sr, died May 4, 2011 following a brief downturn in his long and happy life. Born September 14, 1921, this son of Peter and Mary (Kislin) Rajner helped support his family during the lean years of the late 1930s. His early work experience included a Civilian Conservation Corps job in Idaho. In 1939 Al began his career as a Boilermaker. A veteran of World War II, he earned his Paratrooper'™s Wings and served in the European Theater with the 1276th Combat Engineer Battalion. Returning home, he married Eleanore Theresa Kertz and they started their family with a daughter in 1946. By the spring of 1959 five sons rounded out the household. Although Al'™s work sometimes took him out of town, he maintained close ties with his boyhood friends and neighborhood. As a lifetime member of VFW Post 4906 he enjoyed the Birmingham District and its families until his final weeks. In addition to his social circle Al was an active participant in a number of sports. He played semi-pro football until his early 30s, hunted, fished, played golf and bowled. He was also an accomplished gardener and a first-rate cook. Al'™s survivors include his brother, Andrew (Esther) Rajner; daughter, Jeanette (Doc) Wells; sons, Richard (Katherine), Jonathan (Judy), Peter (Mary Lou), James (Diane); grandchildren and great-grandchildren; many wonderful nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, five brothers and his son, Albert P. Jr. He will also be missed by scores of good friends, Boilermakers Local 85 union brothers, and uncounted others touched by his outgoing nature. Al probably won'™t be missed by those opponents whose touchdown attempts were spoiled by his crushing tackles. Friends may visit at the Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Rd. on Friday, May 6, 2011 from 3-9 p.m. with a V.F.W. service at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will begin in the funeral home on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. and proceed to St. Stephens Catholic Church for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. Private interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery.
