Alfred Bailon passed away May 20, 2015 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Alfred Bailon was born on January 30, 1924 in Mt. Carmel, PA to Italian immigrant parents, Urbano (Barney) and Albina (Alma) Rovatti Bailoni. Alfred spent most of his younger years in Shamokin, PA. When he was 17, he joined the CCC and helped build the dam over the Susquehanna River. He returned home to work alongside his father in the Pennsylvania Coal Mines.
Alfred was a very proud veteran who served in the US Army during WWII as a medic in New Guinea and the Philippine Islands. Upon landing on Luzon he and another American Solider hung the American and the Philippine flags over a school house. At one time, his Medic Unit took care of POW's coming out of the Japanese prisons near Subic Bay and later near Manila.
Alfred boarded the USS Yorktown on Christmas Day, 1945 and landed at San Francisco Bay. He was discharged on June 18, 1946. He then joined his father in Toledo; his first job here was at the Chevrolet Plant. In 1948, Alfred was hired at Libbey-Owens-Ford, East Broadway plant, he worked there until the plant closing in 1982; then transferred to the Rossford plant, and retired from there in 1985.
While Alfred was working at the Chevy Plant, a co-worker introduced his sister to Alfred. On April 3, 1948 Alfred married Philomena (Fillamay) Rato at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, where he and his family are still members.
Alfred loved to work picture puzzles, mall-walk, garden, watch wrestling on TV, travel, take casino trips and more than anything, Alfred loved to dance with Fillamay.
Through the years, Alfred built cabinets and closets in the house. Once the grandchildren were around, he built small benches and wall fixtures for their scholastic and academic awards. When his daughters attended the new Cardinal Stritch High School, he and Fillamay helped organize the first Band Boosters.
Alfred and Fillamay never missed their grandchildren's school, scouting or sports activities. During his life, he spoke often of his time in the service, which led to his family taking him to tour the USS Yorktown at Patriots' Point, SC. That same year, his son-in-law took him for a visit to his Pennsylvania hills and to DC for the WWII Memorial. Alfred met Senator Bob Dole at the 'Wall' and carries that picture in his wallet to this day.
Alfred was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Anna, and his loving wife. Alfred will be very much missed by his loving family; daughters Mary Lou (Dennis) Fairchild and Lynnette Rarick; his grandchildren, Amy (Jeremey) and Joy (Brian) Yard and Scott (Emily) Fairchild. Great-granddaughters are Olivia, Gabriella and Isabella.
Visitation will be held on Monday, Memorial Day, May 25 at Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funreal Home at Coy and Starr, Oregon, Ohio from 2-8 p.m. Funeral services will begin Tuesday in the funeral home at 10:15 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial to follow at Epiphany of the Lord/St. Thomas Aquinas at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in St. Ignatius Cemetery.
Donations in Alfred's memory are asked to be directed to the American Heart Association or to NARFE, Alzheimer Research.
The family thanks the doctors, nurses and staff at Bay Park Hospital and at Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
