Andrew R. Pocse, 83, of Oregon, Ohio passed away on Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Perrysburg. Andy was born on January 18, 1934 in Toledo, OH to Andrew and Anna (Marusz) Pocse. The family lived at Woodford Street in the Birmingham area. He attended Waite High School where he excelled in athletics and academics. He played one year of freshman football, later moving up to three years of varsity football, playing for Coach Frank Pauly and Les Binkley. Andrew received all-city honors in 1950 and 1951 and Honorable Mention All-State and the Michigan Academic Award (Scholar-Athletic) in 1952. He graduated 27th in his class academically and received twenty-three full-time- scholarship offers at various universities, of which he selected the University of Wisconsin. He attended the University of Wisconsin in 1952 and played varsity football under coaches "Ivy" Williamson and Milt Bruhn. In 1955, he returned to Toledo University and married Geraldine Burford (Woodward H.S.). He picked up his athletic and academic careers receiving a full football scholarship and in 1956 was chosen co-captain of the football team. Andy played one year at Toledo University and later received two offers to try-out for the 1957 New York Giants and 1957 Green Bay Packers Football Organizations. With an up-coming family he declined the professional offers and decided to try teaching full-time. In 1957 he was approached by Clay High School and offered a job coaching and teaching Social Studies. Andrew was hired by the Oregon Board of Education in 1957 working under James O'Brian, - Principal at Clay High School. His first extra-curricular duty was coaching football with coaches, Spring, L.D. Morgan. Martishius, Niederhauser and Head Coach Ted Federici. As his first solo head coaching job as Reserved Football Coach his teams won five straight G.L.L. Championships. He was also trusted with the task of physical training and strict fundamental offensive line tactics. While teaching and coaching, Andrew returned to the University of Toledo and gained his Master Degree in Social Studies Education. He became active at St. Stephen's Church and served as President of his Church Council and as a member of the Elementary School Board. At the high school level, he accepted his duties as President of the Social Studies Department and he served the Teachers Faculty as President of the Teachers Union for two years. In 1984, Andrew and his family (Pamela, Karen and Thomas) suffered a tragedy with the sudden death of Andrew's wife, Geraldine. He continued to work during the first half of 1985, but decided to retire from teaching in 1985. The year 1986 was better for Andrew because he remarried an acquaintance friend from his high school days, Edythe M. Alspach (Waite). His family was now expanded by the addition of a new wife and her two children, Kris Alspach and Kathryn Way.
Andrew was preceded in death by his parents; Andrew and Anna Pocse; sister, Anna Mae Lucas; brother-in-law, Elmer Lucas. He is survived by his loving wife "Edy"; daughter, Pamela Pocse, Karen (Gerry) Jeremy; son, Tom (Lisa); step-son, Kris "Oz" (Darlene) Alspach; step-daughter, Kathryn (Jeff) Way; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; aunt, Rita Byers; many nieces and nephews.
Friends may visit at the Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Rd. on Thursday, July 20, 2017 from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, July 21, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Epiphany of the Lord Parish – St. Stephen's Catholic Church, 2018 Consaul St., Toledo. The family will greet friends in church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. A private burial will take place in North Oregon Cemetery. The family requests that any tribute in Andrew's name be directed to Epiphany of the Lord Catholic Parish or Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
