Obituary

Andrew Joseph Zsigray, Jr., 90, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Thursday morning, March 27, 2025. A recent battle with multiple medical ailments, ended a long, fruitful, fulfilling and substantial life. Andrew, known affectionately as "Bud", truly lived up to that very appropriate moniker throughout his life. Born on March 7, 1935, Bud grew up in the Birmingham neighborhood in East Toledo. He was the second of five sons of Andrew Joseph Zigray, Sr. and wife Mary (Kalasz) Zigray, along with brothers Robert, Frank, Joseph and Thomas.

His faith was central throughout his life. A dedicated lifelong member of St. Stephen Catholic Church (Epiphany of the Lord Parish), he was a Eucharist Minister, and served as an alter boy well into his 80's. He served on the Parish Council and volunteered at many festivals and dinners. He was extremely proud of his Hungarian heritage. For his lifelong work in his childhood neighborhood, Bud was inducted into the Birmingham Hall of Fame in 1987.

Bud graduated from Macomber High School 1953 and after a short stint in industry, he along with four of his closest childhood friends - Dick Kuzma, Ron "Buck" Demko, Ernie Berg, and John Sanders, enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served their country. Four of the five served primarily overseas in the occupation forces near Nellingen Germany.

Upon completing his military service, Bud returned home and met the love of his life, Teresa Rose Georgoff. The two were wed on June 22, 1957, a marriage of nearly 68 years that produced four children. He would frequently tell his children that he was the richest man alive because of the joy his family brought him.

Bud went on to work at Libbey Glass and then enrolled in the Toledo Police Academy. He began his 28 years with the Toledo Police Department in 1960, and after four years as a patrolman, spent the majority of his career as a juvenile detective, fulfilling his strong desire to help kids. He ended his career in 1988 with several commendations, and a Distinguished Service Award.

Active in coaching basketball, Bud received the CYO Monsignor Schmidt Award for outstanding contributions to the CYO basketball program in 1978-79. He won several league championships, and developed lifelong relationships with his players. Bud also enjoyed coaching his granddaughters at St. Stephen. He went on to coached at Cardinal Stritch High School alongside his daughter, Kathleen, and was recently inducted into the Cardinal Stritch High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

Bud's grandchildren were his greatest joy. He looked forward to their calls and visits. His sense of humor was so endearing, and he loved, supported and encouraged them in such a special way. Each of them knew how deeply they were loved.

Bud was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Robert, Frank, and sisters-in-law Joan and Dolores.

He is survived by wife Teresa, sons Anthony (Carla), James (Lisa), daughters Maryann Achter (Roger) and Kathleen Orsini (Ralph); grandchildren, Kate Achter (Tina), Susan Achter, Jessica Achter, Ross Achter (Jenna), Erin Orsini, Emily Orsini, Dominick Orsini (Brooke), Alison Wahl (Ryan), Kirsten Magers (Steven), Sean Delauder (Laura), Mary McCarthy (Sean); 14 great-grandchildren; brothers, Joseph Zigray (Janice) and Thomas Zigray (Connie); and many nieces and nephews.
