Anne Magdalene Kiss, age 89, died peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, October 25th, 2005. Anne led a varied and colorful life and to all she met, Anne was unforgettable. To many, she was a fiery, eccentric, glamorous and often tenacious red head. She was born December 4, 1915 to John B. and Anna Toth Kiss and was the youngest of five children. Preceding her in death were her parents, John and Anna and older brothers, Joseph, John (Mary), Julius (Dorothy Kiss Gladieux) and Frank (Helen). Her sister, Barbara (Walter) Lampert also preceded her in death.
At an early age, Anne joined the Sisters of the Divine Redeemer order and became known as Sister M. Emerentia. She taught all academic subjects to sixth graders. Anne next chose to visit the Mother House in Budapest, Hungary where her curiosity about travel, cultures, languages and foreign politics took hold.
Ms. Anne Kiss left the religious order and joined the American Foreign Service and Department of State as a translator in Hungarian and German languages. Anne found her niche as a world traveler. In her work for the State Department, she then learned Arabic, was a guest for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, attended a Mass said by Padre Pio, and enjoyed cruises and other types of travel. In her long career with the State Department, Anne traveled to such places as: Hungary, Egypt, Tehran, Iran, Nigeria, England, Russia, Italy, Rome and many other places, including Washington, D.C.
After retirement, Anne returned home to her Hungarian neighborhood in Toledo, Ohio. One of her most proudest moments was when she was inducted into the Birmingham Hall of Fame through Saint Stephen's Catholic Church.
Anne is survived by many nieces and nephews. Mary Ann (Norbert) Hamernik, Carolyn (Ira) Cushing, Barbara (Robert) Sauter, Robert (Mary) Kiss, Judy (John) Behner, James (Carolyn) Kiss, Frank (Carol) Kiss and Michael ( Bonnie) Kiss. Anne is also survived by numerous great nieces and nephews and many great-great nieces and nephews, as well as Robert Stuart, a good friend to Auntie Anne.
