Arthur C. Rae, 88 of Northwood, Ohio, passed away Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at the Ohio Veteran'™s Home Sandusky, Ohio.
Art was born June 25, 1924 to Margaret and Edward Rae and grew up in East Toledo, where he attended Waite High School. He enlisted in the United States Navy and served in the Caribbean and South Pacific during World War II. Throughout his youth and young adulthood, he was an avid amateur boxer. He fought and won in several Golden Gloves Boxing Tournaments, including two in Chicago in 1947 and 1948. Art worked as a truck driver for Yellow Freight. Art enjoyed volunteering at Bay View Golf Course and spending winters in Palmetto, Florida. His favorite hobbies included camping, fishing, boating and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his loving wife of more than 40 years, Edna (Shepherd) Rae; sons Michael (Debbie), Mark, Chris (Kay), and Brian; daughters Carol Singleton (Frank Sadlowski), Janet Rae, Maureen Georgevich (Dan), MaryJo (Mike) Kern, and Angela (Clayton) Riddel; step-children, Robert (Janet) Shepherd, Edward (Karen) Shepherd, Michael (Sandy) Shepherd, and Darla (Skip) Vancena; 33 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren and 31 great-great grandchildren. Art was preceded in death by his parents Edward and Margaret; brothers, James, Glenn, Edward, and Paul; and sons, Artie and Thomas.
Friends may call at the Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Road on Friday, June 14, 2013 from 2:00-8:00 pm. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, June 15, 2013 at 10:00 am in the funeral home. Interment will follow at Lake Township Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Ohio Veteran'™s Home, 3416 Columbus Ave, Sandusky, OH 44870, or a charity of the donor'™s choice. The family of Arthur Rae would like to thank the staff and volunteers of the Ohio Veteran'™s Home in Sandusky for the fine care, love, and compassion they showed him. We would also like to thank Stein Hospice of Sandusky for their compassionate dedication to the needs of Art and his family in his final days on earth.
