Barbara Ann Horvath passed away on December 31, 2013. She was born April 24, 1959, to Alice and Joseph Horvath, who preceded her in death.
She is survived by her loving husband, Thomas L. Garey, to whom she was married on January 1, 1982, and their children, Ann (Seth Timman), John (Kendra Abbott), Thomas E. 'œTed', and Charles. She is also survived by siblings Mary Miller (Rance), Charles (Cindy Johnston), Andrew, Joseph (Robin), Angela Abdelkader (Sadek), David (Susan), and Stephen (Tonya England); brother-in-law, Robert (Terri) Garey.
Barbara grew up in the Birmingham neighborhood of East Toledo, graduating from Waite High School in 1977, Owens Technical College in 1982, and Bowling Green State University in 1987, with a Business/Accounting degree. She later achieved her CPA.
Barbara worked for several accounting firms in Toledo and Bowling Green, Ohio, and was employed for the past 17 years as a Senior Tax Analyst and 1065 software developer at Thomson Reuters, formerly Creative Solutions, Inc., in Dexter, Michigan.
Among Barbara'™s many passions were her children, writing, and travel. She considered raising and nurturing her children into independent, caring adults to be her proudest accomplishment. She supported and encouraged their interests by participating in parent clubs and band boosters. A particular point of pride for Barbara was the participation of all of her children in the All-Ohio State Fair Band. She was always there to listen and counsel her children through the trials and tribulations as they matured and continued to provide advice and guidance into their young adulthood. Barbara'™s strong presence has greatly enriched the lives of her children and the special bond that she shared with each of them will most certainly transcend her passing.
During the years, her passion for travel allowed her to enjoy locales as diverse as London, England; Las Vegas, Nevada; Key West, Florida; Charleston, SC; Banff, Alberta; as well as Yosemite, Yellowstone and Death Valley National Parks. Along with her family, she enjoyed many years of camping at Pinery Provincial Park in Ontario. In winter, Barbara loved to follow the sun and dodge the cold and snow of Ohio.
Barbara'™s contributions to her community were many. Her care for children took the form of a long commitment as a board member to the Inner Peace Homes foster care agency in Bowling Green, Ohio. She also enjoyed over 10 years of performing with the Bell Choir at the First United Methodist Church in Sylvania, Ohio, and for many years, the band and parishioners have depended on her presence at the Collingwood Presbyterian Church as the sound technician for the Garden Worship Service, as she managed the sound board and kept the band sounding great.
She will be especially missed by Tom, her husband of 32 years. Barbara'™s tolerance of Tom'™s bad jokes, her impeccable memory for faces and names, and her supportive companionship have been gifts that he will always treasure. She was his rock, traveling life'™s path with him in good times and bad, and keeping the family together and strong with a firm but loving hand. Always there to pack lunches, plan trips, be a confidant, and tend to ill children, her dedication was boundless. In practical ways, she has left her mark as well; her eye for interior design can be seen in her 'œpink bathroom' in the family home.
Barbara touched so many lives in her time here. As you recall her, please take a moment to hold your loved ones close and say a prayer for her and her family as she transitions home to be with our Lord in Heaven.
