Obituary

Betty J. Hammitt, 99, of Elmore, Ohio passed away, Wednesday, December 1, 2021 at University of Toledo Medical Center. Betty was born in Toledo, Ohio March 3, 1922 to Max and Ione (Woodruff) McCall. Betty grew up in East Toledo during the Great Depression and attended Waite High School. In her youth, Betty enjoyed dances at the Trianon Ballroom and roller skating at Forest Park. As a single young lady, one of her favorite jobs was working as an elevator operator in the Owens Illinois Building. She also supported the war effort, as a riveter on the leading edge wing assembly line for Willys Overland. She would joke to her friends, she wanted to marry an orphan. On April 20, 1946 it came to pass, marrying a young sailor, Edmond Hammitt from Brooklyn, New York. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Williston, Ohio where they raisedtheir family. Betty enjoyed camping at PTL, Myrtle Beach and WPOS bus trips.Traveling to Trinidad and Israel were highlights of her life. She was devotedto her Christian faith and taught preschool children at Grace Evangelical Church in Oregon, Ohio. Betty discovered the way to personalcontentment through the simple things in life, like taking a long bike ride or working a new puzzle. She was a lovingmother and good friend with a warm sweet spirit and will be missed by those who knew her. Surviving are her children, Randy (Sandy) Hammitt, Gary (Gail) Hammitt, Denise (John) Alt; 5 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by her parents; husband, Edmond H. Hammitt; and siblings, Robert McCall and Marion Baran. Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 5, 2021 from 12:00 pm until4:00 pm at Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Millbury Chapel, 1111 Woodville Road. Funeral Services Monday, December 6, 2021 at 11:00 am in the funeral home. Interment will follow at Williston Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to Ohio Veterans Home, Sandusky.
