Obituary

Carmen Lea Claus, 83, a resident of Holy Family Manor in Bethlehem since December of 2013, passed away Sunday, January 18, at Lehigh Valley Hospital Muhlenberg, located in Bethlehem, PA, where her daughter Julia Cattaneo resides. She was the high-school sweetheart and widow of Joseph R. Claus who died November 25, 2013. Joseph and Carmen were residents of Stroudsburg, PA, until Mr. Claus' passing. They enjoyed 62 years of marriage. Born on February 13, 1931 in Toledo, OH, Carmen was the daughter of the late Michael and Josephine (DeAngelo) Gliatti, who owned and operated "Mike's Upholstery Shop" in Point Place, Toledo. She graduated from Central Catholic High School and first worked at the Edison Building, along with her best friend, Lois Seiler, as an elevator operator. Thereafter, she went to work for Leo Marks Jewelers until marrying her husband Joe, her "Mighty Mouse" and hero. Carmen's life combined unfailing care, kindness, and compassion for her many friends and family, excellence at her later place of employment, Picatinny Arsenal, Rockaway Township, New Jersey, where she received many commendations for outstanding performance, and a gracious acceptance of the increasing difficulties associated with a serious stroke suffered some 10 years ago. Surviving Carmen are four devoted children, Julia Cattaneo, Jennifer Newsom, Joseph R. Claus, Jr. and his wife, Veronica and Jeffrey Claus; three loving grandchildren, Nick Cattaneo and his wife, Beth, Melissa Cattaneo Tran and her husband, Ty, and Cassandra Newsom and her daughter, Cameron, Carmen's great grandchild. She is also survived by her two sisters, Mary Jane Carpenter and Sharon Zeberkiewicz and Sharon's husband, Robert, as well as one brother, Edward Gliatti and his wife Anne. Cremation was private and services will be held in the Toledo area at Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 South Coy Road. Visiting and sharing of memories will be on Saturday, January 24, 2015 from 1 to 3pm with service to follow. There will be a friend and family dinner gathering after the service. Flowers or donations made in Carmen's name to the American Stroke Association would be appreciated. Local arrangements by William H.
