On June 3, 2009, a shining light was extinguished as the Lord came to ease the struggle against cancer for Cecil Hastings. He was born to Mary and Cecil Sr., on November 12, 1948. Cecil lived a life dedicated to family and service. After a childhood blessed with loving parents and siblings, James and Rebecca, Cecil loved playing basketball and baseball with neighborhood friends. He graduated from Waite High School where he was affectionately known as "Stick". He attended the University of Toledo before he married and was blessed with two lovely daughters, Sarah and Rachel, who were his heart and soul. He spent endless hours caring for them as infants and coaching their softball teams as they grew, all the while working full time at Libbey Owens Ford for 14 years and the Toledo Public Schools for 23 years. His service to others included becoming a Big Brother of NWO, a Probation Officer for troubled teens and serving as a volunteer fireman for the Oregon Fire Dept. In 1999, Cecil married his second wife, Hope, where he blessed her two daughters, Ellie and Liz with a loving father and mentor. Again he was an active figure in their lives and has continued providing fatherly advice, love and support. Cecil and Hope became owners of a Bed and Breakfast for 7 years until his illness caused them to close this business. You could always find Cecil at a Mud Hens game, cheering for Notre Dame and the Detroit Tigers, enjoying jazz music, or off on a new traveling adventure. However, he most enjoyed being grandpa to his 4 grandchildren, Ashley, Alex, Ariana, and Parker. Cecil will always be remembered for his love of family, his quick wit and his kind and gentle manner. He was loved and respected by all who knew him. We will love him forever. Cecil is survived by his wife, Hope; loving daughters, Sarah (Eddie) Avina, Rachel (Donta) McQuillin, Ellison (Pat) Jacob, Elizabeth McLaughlin; grandchildren, Alex and Ariana Avina, Ashley McQuillin, Parker Jacob; sister, Rebecca (Mark) Weitzman. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and Mary Hastings; brother, James Hastings; in-laws, Harry and Mary Lou Kessler. Visitation will be on Sunday, June 7, 2009, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Eggleston Meinert Pavley Funeral Home, 440 S. Coy, Oregon, Ohio where services will be conducted Monday, June 8 at 1 p.m. Family will receive visitors Monday beginning at 11 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will follow at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park. Cecil and his family would like to send their heartfelt thanks to Dr. David Brown and his staff for their wonderful care and support. We send our love and appreciation to the wonderful staff of Hospice of Northwest Ohio for the amazing devotion to his care. Big hugs to Tracey, Lauren, LeeAnn, Danielle and Pastor Mark English.
