Charles E. Breeden, area educator and World War II Veteran, passed away on October 24, 2014 at St. Charles Hospital, at the age of 91 years old. Born in Harrison County, Indiana, Mr. Breeden attended a one room school before moving to New Albany, Indiana, where he met his future wife Jane, the love of his life. The two were married in 1942, shortly after he was drafted into the Army at the beginning of World War II. Although rejected for Combat Flight Training due to health reasons, Mr. Breeden always had a love of flying which led him to eventually earn his pilot'™s license and own his own plane later in life. He eventually served his country in the Army Signal Corps in India and the Philippines. He was also a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Oregon, Ohio. After the war, Mr. Breeden earned his Bachelor'™s Degree in Education from Indiana State Teacher'™s College in 1948. He began teaching in a very small high school near Corydon, Indiana. He moved his family to Northwest Ohio to work briefly at Erie Ordinance (now Camp Perry) near Port Clinton, and began his teaching career at Jerusalem Township Elementary School in 1955. When Jerusalem Township School consolidated with the Oregon City Schools he taught science at Eisenhower Junior High School. Mr. Breeden earned his Master'™s Degree in Educational Administration and an Ed. Specialist'™s Certificate from the University of Toledo. He served as principal of Clay Elementary School from 1962-1969, after which he was appointed Superintendent of the Columbus Grove City School System. He served in that capacity until his retirement in 1982, whereupon he and his wife returned to the Toledo area to live near their family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane; and sisters Blanche Holbrook of Framingham, Massachusetts, and Agnes Hisey of Greenville, Indiana. He is survived by his sister, Ruth Sturgeon of Sellersburg, Indiana; daughter Becky (Ron) Buehrer; son, Charles (Julie) Breeden Jr.; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. There will be no visitation. A funeral service will be held at Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 South Coy Road, on Wednesday, October 29, at 1:00 p.m. Interment will be private.
