Clayton A. Weis, Jr., 92. of Millbury, Ohio passed away Thursday, October 12, 2017 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Perrysburg. Mr. Weis was born in Millbury, Ohio on January 7, 1925 to Clayton and Martha (Whiteman) Weis. He was a 1943 graduate of Lake High School, and upon graduation was drafted into the United States Army. He participated in the invasion of Okinawa and was a Medic and Electrician for the 76th Field Hospital. He also served in Cebu, Philippines and Sapporo Japan. Following military service, Clayton worked for Libbey-Owens-Ford, East Broadway Plant for 32 years, retiring in 1985. On May 4, 1957, Clayton married Ann Polick and she preceded him in death on October 11, 1999.
Clayton began playing trumpet as a child and he continued playing until this past August. For the past 71 years, he was a member of the Genoa American Legion Band, playing trumpet and serving as band librarian. He also played with the Deutschmeister German Band and Owens College Community Band. Clayton was instrumental in having the Genoa American Legion Band play for the veterans returning on the Northwest Ohio Honor Flights. Clayton's trip on Honor Flight in 2010 with his son as his guardian, and a recent trip with his family to the National WWII Museum in New Orleans were highlights for him. Clayton coached his daughter's softball teams for a number of years and attended nearly every softball game played by his son and daughter. He enjoyed working with his daughter volunteering for the Adopt America Network annual dinner and auction until age 90 and volunteering with his son for the German American Festival. In recent years, he enjoyed talking about his experiences in WWII, Saturday lunch with his children and cousins, and spending time with family. Mr. Weis was a life member of the Genoa American Legion Post #324; member of Toledo Swiss Men's Society, and the German American Festival Society.
Surviving Clayton are his daughter, Wendy (Rick) Sowers and son, Allen (Brenda,) Weis; 2 step-grandchildren; a step great-granddaughter; along with many nieces, nephews, and loving friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ann; and sister, Virginia Wells.
The family will receive friends at the Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Millbury Chapel, 1111 Woodville Road (east of I-280) on Sunday, October 15, 2017 from 3:00 pm – 9:00 pm. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, October 16, 2017 at 11:00 am in the funeral home. Dr. Rev. Robert Ball, officiating. Interment will follow at Lake Township Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Genoa American Legion Band or Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
