Cornell "Slugger" Tanner II, 74, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away on Friday, September 4, 2026. He was born in Baltimore City, Maryland on April 27, 1952 to Cornell and Erma (Schwartz) Tanner. Slugger started working at a young age in order to provide for his family. At age 11 he and his family moved to Toledo, Ohio where he would meet and marry the love of his life, Debbie (Glaze) on February 14, 1981. He worked as a box truck driver for many years but he had many passions in life. Slugger loved listening to music and in his younger years playing the guitar. He enjoyed his Hamm's Beer, going bowling and making homemade chorizo. If you wanted to have a good time and enjoy some good food, you made sure to make your way to Slugger's house when he was having backyard cookouts with chicken or ribs on the menu. He went to the Indy 500 for the last 33 years and recently had made that his "dad's weekend" where it was open to his friends and family. He and his wife Debbie also enjoyed going down to the Daytona 500 for the past 12 years. No matter what Slugger was going through, his ability to keep a positive attitude was something most of us could learn from. He was a simple man, a great man but most importantly, a family man, that will be truly missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Debbie; son, Cornell "Corkey" Tanner; daughter, Jackie Mistiatis; grandchildren, Elizabeth Minton, Nicholas Tanner; ex daughter-in-law, Michelle Tanner; and many nieces, nephews and loving family members. He was preceded in death by his parents.
The family will receive friends at Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Rd., Oregon, Ohio 43616 on Thursday, September 10, 2026 from 2:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home on Friday, September 11, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Lake Township Cemetery.
