Danny R. Fields, 56, an avid coin and art collector, political activist, and Toronto Maple Leafs fan passed away December 19, 2007 after an eight year battle with pulmonary disease. Danny was born in Kentucky, raised in Northwest Indiana and Tucson Arizona. He also lived in various other places until he settled in Toledo in the 1970's. Danny worked for the former Toledo Mental Hospital and Haughton Elevator, and he retired in 2001 from NSS. Danny was a past board member of GLU, a GLBT community civil rights group. He, along with several others, received a 1998 Toledo ACLU award for civil rights work. GLU recently merged with the present day Equality Toledo, which recently sponsored the domestic partners legislation passed by Toledo City Council. Danny was also involved with the annual Decked Out Event, one of the largest fundraisers on the Willis B. Boyer. He was also active in Lutheran's Concerned and the Log Cabin Republicans. In 2001 after being diagnosed he continued to work on his partner, Gene Hagedorn's, successful run for Oregon City Council. Dan enjoyed trips to Belize, snorkeling, and exploring Mayan ruins. He also enjoyed trips to northern Michigan, kayaking, the Au Sable River and having dinner at his favorite restaurant, the Douglas Lake Bar. Surviving are his partner of 12 years, Gene Hagedorn; sisters, Bessie, Lola and Bobbie; many nieces and nephews. Danny was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers and 2 sisters. Visitation and a memorial service will be held at a later date in Indiana. Contributions in Danny's memory can be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
