IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Diane May
Ettl Peatee
May 8, 1943 – April 17, 2025
Diane M. Peatee, 81, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away peacefully, Thursday, April 17, 2025, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio Ebeid Sylvania surrounded by the immediate family she loved deeply. Diane was with her guardian angels throughout her lifetime earthside, including Don, her late husband, and her daughter, Tricia, who was brought home to the Lord in the same room at Hospice by synchronicity. Diane was born May 8, 1943, in Toledo, Ohio, to Joseph and Hazel (Morrin) Ettl. In 1961, she graduated from Central Catholic High School. She was a longtime parishioner and volunteer at Epiphany of the Lord Parish – St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church.
As some details of Diane's childhood have left her surviving family members to wonder more about, she was known to be studious and always eager to learn in her school years. She often described the self-taught discipline she inherited and eventually grew to appreciate this trait that she incorporated into her future years spent working and raising a family. Diane always held a great love for music, as she specifically spent her younger years following the work and records produced by the great Elvis Presley. Looking back on Thanksgiving Day 1956, Diane could be seen as a pre-teen next to the stage at the Toledo Sports Arena where Elvis quite literally performed the show of a lifetime leaving many exclusive memories to his Toledo performance that year. Supposedly you could say she was even a founding member of his local teen fan club.
While raising her family, Diane worked various secretarial positions, and childcare in her home, even years after her own children were grown. She held great relationships for many years with colleagues that she worked with and families of children that she cared for. Diane was a friendly face to many as she had lots of friends over the course of her life and extended family members whom she adored catching up with. Diane's family would like to thank the many neighborly people she resided nearby at every address she lived, as she cherished seeing her neighbors on the day to day when getting the mail or landscaping her yard.
Diane's hobbies included sewing, crafts, collectables, gardening, and playing card games. She spent many summers maintaining a well-kept pool as she enjoyed aquatic therapy and having the amenities available for her family when visiting. Diane and her husband enjoyed building a beautiful scale doll house together and furnishing the doll house from their travels. Her eldest granddaughter recalls her great love for the game, Rummy, as well as her grandmother's virtue of patience for putting together puzzles. In her later years, Diane enjoyed spending her free time doing crossword puzzles and staying in the know of current events from reading The Toledo Blade newspaper or watching the news. Diane never denied herself the joy of screen time, as the Hallmark channel kept her company in recent years. Her grandchildren also remember their childhood stays at grandma and papa's house when their grandmother would pop into the living room from preparing supper in the kitchen to answer questions from evening episodes of Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. Diane was a talented cook who always had the traditional fare for large family holidays, but also adding something new to try. She also thoroughly enjoyed baking, as pecan and pumpkin pies were some of her specialties. Diane loved to give her son-in-law some friendly competition at Christmas time over the years with their execution of the same seven-layer bar dessert recipe that she had passed down to him.
Diane always carried a nurturing compassion for the animals she cared for and the ones she looked forward to seeing at the zoo, as well as her favorite insects in nature. Around 1980, Diane and her children added the addition of their family dog, Pookie, a cocker spaniel who took wonderful care of the children as they grew into adulthood. Pookie passed away around 1997 near the age of 17, almost two years after the birth of Diane's eldest granddaughter. At the beginning of 2016, prior to the passing of her eldest child, Diane had found her sweet companion, Lizzie, as they took care of each other in the times of happiness and times of loss that life would bring. She rescued the King Charles spaniel that she named in tribute to Queen Elizabeth II. Diane also had a deep love for the parakeets she kept great care of over time. Overall, she always talked about her favorite animals passionately such as giraffes, house and stray "kitties", and insects including lady bugs, butterflies and dragonflies. Diane was a woman who enjoyed socializing in conversation and rarely sat in silence around the people she loved or anyone she would just meet. Most of all, family was her purest joy and especially children and animals who always had a special place in her heart. Family members of Diane's recall her use of silly euphemisms and how she would make gestures with her quirky sense of humor.
Diane is survived by her children, Kurt (Laura) Wolfe and Mark Wolfe; son-in-law, Matthew Nagel; grandchildren, Marisa Nagel, Alexandra Nagel (Josh), Brad Wolfe, and Shea Wolfe; great-granddaughter, Olivia; along with many loving family members and friends. Preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Tricia Nagel; husband, Donald Peatee; and siblings, Evelyn Rocosky, Ellory (Bud) Ettl, Gene Ettl, and Helen Holmes.
