Don J. Chandler Sr., 77, of Toledo passed away on Saturday, February 2, 2008, in his home. Don was born on August 28, 1930, in Mt. Hope West Virginia to Allen and Vella (Lawson) Chandler Sr.. On October 18, 1951, he and Betty J. Branham of Martin, Kentucky were married in Charleston, West Virginia. In 1948 Mr. Chandler began working with his father on the former New York Central Railroad. Don would then be hired as a glass worker for Libbey Owen Ford Glass Company in 1954 . He would be employed there for 38 years before his retirement in 1992. Don was also employed at EK Meats for 12 years. In the late 1960's he would purchase an east side Toledo Blade route and he, his children and grandchildren would deliver the papers to residents in the Miami and Oak Street neighborhoods.
Surviving are his loving wife, Betty J. "Billy Jean"; children, Don "Jeff" Chandler Jr., Gwen D. Gregory, Alma (Dennis) Becker, Thomas E. Chandler, Staff Master Sergeant Steven (Laurie) Chandler; siblings, Susan Cromwell, Gladys Davis, Jean Polk, Allen Chandler Jr, Fred Chandler, Mary Lou Fowler; daughters-in-law, Debbie and Claudia Chandler; 24 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; children, John A. Chandler, Chester R. Chandler, David L. Chandler; sister, Betty Hoylman.
Visitation will be held at the Eggleston Meinert Pavley Funeral Home Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Road, Oregon, Ohio on Tuesday from 2 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park. The family wishes to thank the staffs at both Bay Park Community Hospital and Hospice of Northwest Ohio (especially his nurse, Tracey Dippman) for their tender loving care.
