Donald C. Ammiller, 65, of Oregon, OH passed away on Saturday, May 26, 2012 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Perrysburg with his loving family at his side.
Born on April 23, 1947, in Dover, OH, he was the son of Carl and Emma (Wisintainer) Ammiller. Don graduated from Dover High School in 1965 where he excelled in football, basketball and baseball. He graduated from Wittenberg University in 1969 with a BS Degree in English. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity.
He began his professional life as an English teacher at Claymont Junior High School in Uhrichsville, OH, where he also coached varsity football and basketball. He met the love of his life, Wanda (Dessecker) Ammiller, during his teaching years, and they married on November 24, 1971. In 1973, Don made a career change and started in the insurance industry with Liberty Mutual Insurance. He was offered the position of manager of the Toledo Office of Liberty Mutual in 1977, at which time the family moved to Oregon, OH. Don subsequently started and operated the former LAW (Lynch, Ammiller, Walsh) Agency with two partners. This agency was purchased in 1987 by Daniel James Insurance Agency of Perrysburg, which later became Brown and Brown of Ohio, where Don continued his career in sales and management.
Don was highly respected by many area businessmen as an expert in the Property and Casualty field, and was admired for his honesty, integrity, and loyalty to his many clients. He retired on December 31, 2011, just two weeks before his diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. Along with his successful career in the insurance industry, he always maintained his passion for education and sports, always the consummate teacher and coach.
Don was a past president of both the Oregon Jaycees and Oregonians. He was an avid golfer, and as a member of Eagles Landing Golf Course, achieved a hole-in-one during league play in 2009. Don loved to read and was a Civil War aficionado, having visited many battle sites. He enjoyed playing bridge, and his phenomenal memory made him an excellent Trivial Pursuit player. Following his children and grandchildren in their many athletic, artistic and academic endeavors brought him much happiness.
His dreams for extensive travel and golf with Wanda following retirement were not able to be fulfilled, but she is left with many memories of their Mediterranean Cruise, trips to Bermuda, Aruba, Germany, Rome, and most preciously, their recent Hawaiian vacation to celebrate 40 years of marriage.
Left to cherish his memory are wife, Wanda; daughter, Michelle (Don) Huss of Oregon; son, Matthew (Jessica) Ammiller of Strongsville, OH; and his three granddaughters, who brought such joy to his life, Megan Huss, Madison Huss, and Alayna Ammiller. He is also survived by a sister, Carol (Dennis) Lang of Newbury, OH.
