"Whooper" Hughes Sr., 68, of Oregon, OH and formerly of east Toledo, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 27, 2006, in his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Shelby County on April 14, 1938, to Forrest and Florence (George) Hughes. Don was employed as a Fork Lift Driver with GM Powertrain for 32 years retiring in 1996. He also worked for Sunoco Gas Station, Dunn Chevy Olds as a driver, MSC Walbridge Coatings and Erie Steel. Don was a fireman in the U.S. Air Force for 4 years and 2 years in the Navy Reserves. He was a little league head coach for Oakdale School and assisted his son, Donnie in coaching the Raymer A's. He was an avid fan of the Cleveland Browns, Indians and the Ohio State Buckeyes. Don also was involved in Mericel-Farly Trout Club and R.E.I.A. for many years. Surviving are his loving wife of 48 years, Betty (Hunyor); children, Don (Cindy) Hughes of Oregon, OH, Cindy Martin of Toledo, OH, Dan (Pat) Hughes of Northwood, OH, Connie (Tim) Miller of Virginia Beach, VA, Ron (Marcy) Hughes of Oregon, OH, Bonnie (Rob) Ramsden of Perrysburg, OH and Lindy (Dennis) Keyser of Monclova, OH; brothers, William (Ethel) Hughes of Northwood, OH, James (Dorothy) Hughes of Toledo, OH, Raymond (Juanita) Hughes of Walbridge, OH; sister, Doris Swartz of Perrysburg, OH; sister-in-law, Jeannine Hughes of Walbridge, OH; brother-in-law, Joseph Hunyor of Oregon, OH; 20 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Franklin E. Hughes. Family and friends may visit at the Eggleston Meinert Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Rd. on Thursday from 2-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home on Friday at 11:00 a.m. with interment following in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers those wishing to make an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the family or Assistant Dogs of America.
