Don Van Dyke, 64, of Oregon OH, passed away on October 23, 2017, surrounded by the loving arms of his family. Don was born on April 13, 1953 to Laura & Donald E. Van Dyke. He grew up on McKinley street in east Toledo, followed by his years on North Curtice road and Starr avenue in Oregon. Don attended Clay High School, where he was a standout athlete in football & track. He later went on to earn 3 Journeyman cards and graduated summa cum laude from Baker College. Don began his career as an apprentice at Toledo Mold. He also worked at Modern Tool, Chrysler, St. Gobain and Libbey Glass, retiring in February 2016. Don was an entrepreneur and started his own small business, Vandko LTD, with his brother Randy and friend Juan Molina. They sold the famous "Euchre To Go" on-line and around the country.
Don was raised in the Methodist church and converted to the Roman Catholic faith in 1984. He was a member of Holy Rosary parish in east Toledo until it's closure in 2005, and then became a parishioner of Epiphany of the Lord, St. Stephen parish.
Don loved to fish and hunt. He had several boats during his lifetime and Lake Erie was his favorite fishing hole. He enjoyed taking family, friends and neighbors along with him and there were many neighborhood fish fries at the Van Dyke house. Don fished in Alaska, Costa Rica, the Bahamas, the Atlantic, the Gulf and the Pacific and never met a fish he didn't enjoy catching or eating! Don also loved to hunt and enjoyed the quiet and peacefulness of the woods before dawn. He recently bagged his first bear in the wilds of Canada.
Don's real passion though was his love of family. Don met the love of his life, Karen Sinay, at that popular east side hot spot of the early 70's – McDonald's on Woodville Road. Don and Karen eloped on July 13, 1973, when she was 17 and he was 20. They were married for 44 years. They decided early on that they wanted to live their lives taking each day as a gift and enjoying each day for what it was. They vacationed and traveled extensively with their children, family and friends, but many times just the two of them alone, enjoying each other's company.
Don and Karen suffered a full-term stillbirth with their first child, Don Van Dyke Jr. in 1980, but God blessed them with two more sons, Brent and Drew. Don was a great dad and was active in his children's lives. He coached their grade school baseball and basketball teams along with being a Boy Scout pack leader. He was always encouraging and loving, but most of all he was fun to be around. One of the happiest moments of his life was when his granddaughter, BraeLynn, was born. She is the light of his life and calls him PAPA. BraeLynn and Papa spent as much time together as possible, going to McDonald's, the Zoo, Cedar Point, her first airplane ride, first trip to Disney World, and so much more. BraeLynn and Papa are members of Don's "Bear Tooth necklace club".
Don is survived by his loving wife, Karen; sons Brent & Drew, beloved granddaughter BraeLynn and her mother, Brittani Sturgeon. Brothers Chuck (Barb) & Randy (Mary Sue) Van Dyke. Uncle Dave Van Dyke.
