Obituary

Donald J. Vild, P.E., 79, of Oregon, Ohio passed away on November 27, 2007, at his residence. He was born on February 16, 1928, in Cleveland, OH to Joseph and Mary Vild. After graduating from High School, he enlisted in the Army and was stationed in the Philippines as a radio repair specialist. Don graduated from Case Western Reserve in 1952 with a Mechanical Engineering Degree. He became a professional engineer in 1956 and started working for Libbey Owens Ford in 1957 where he became Director of Architectural Products and Services. In 1982, he left to become an Architectural Glass Consultant and formed Donald J. Vild, P.E. & Associates. Don was a member of several Glass Code and Glass Manufacturing Associations and the Oregonian Club. He contributed to the writing of several books and magazine articles including CRC Handbook of Applied Engineering Science, Time Saver Standards for Architectural Design Data and Glass Design for Sloped Glazing. He consulted on several projects worldwide including Grand Canyon Skywalk, Hong Kong Airport and Cleveland Browns Stadium. He also worked on several projects at the Toledo Zoo including the Polar Bear and Gorilla exhibits. Don was proud of being a recipient of a "Plaque of Recognition" from the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Irene A.; sons, Jeffrey and Michael (Susan) Vild; grandchildren, Nathan, Mallory and Matthew Vild and brother, Thomas (Marilyn) Vild. Friends and family may call at the Eggleston Meinert Pavley Funeral Home, 440 S. Coy Rd., Oregon, OH 43616 on Friday, November 30, 2007, from 2-9 p.m. where funeral services will be conducted on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Case Western Reserve School of Engineering or the Toledo Zoo. www.eggleston-meinert.com
