Obituary

Donald Henry Zunk, 88, of East Toledo, passed away on April 11, 2012 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Toledo. He was born May 3, 1923 in Martin, Ohio to Henry Ferdinand Zunk and Henrietta (Blausey) Zunk. He graduated from Waite High School in 1941 and enlisted in the United States Navy in 1943. He was proud of his service as a water tender aboard LST 533 in the Normandy invasion at Omaha Beach on D-Day. On September 20, 1946 he married the love of his life, Shirley Mahler. Don worked as a tool and die maker for several companies before retiring from AP Parts in 1984 after 21 years of service. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, helping his cousin work his farm, watching the Detroit Tigers, spending time with family and, after retirement, traveling extensively around the United States with his wife. He was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church, US LST Association, Ohio Amphibs, and VFW #4906. Don was preceded in death by his parents, wife, son, Keith (Karen) Zunk, and sister, Hilda (Rolland) Hansen. He will be sadly missed by his son, Mark (Linda) Zunk; daughter, Gayle (James) Conrad; granddaughters, Jennifer (Brett) Donnals, Leeann (Kevin) Buehrer, Kristel (Trent) Eichenlaub, and Megan (Steven) Wasilausky; grandsons, Matthew (Stephanie) Zunk, Adam Zunk, and Andrew Zunk; seven great-grandchildren; sister, June Smarkel; brother-in-law, Rolland Hansen. Special heart-felt thanks go to the staff and management at the Lutheran Home at Toledo Assisted Living for making Don'™s declining years comfortable and enjoyable. Visitation will be held Sunday from 2-9 p.m. at the Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Road. Funeral services will be held at St. Mark Lutheran Church, 649 Elmore St., Toledo, Ohio on Monday at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be in Elliston Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Mark Lutheran Church or Lutheran Home at Toledo Assisted Living. Visitation: Sunday, 2:00 - 9:00 p.m. Services: Monday, 11:00 a.m. at St. Mark Lutheran Church Interment: Elliston Cemetery
