Doris C. Toppin, 89, passed away Wednesday, February 27, 2008 at Heartland of Waterville. She was born in Toledo, Ohio on July 28, 1918 to Walter and Louise Mary (Klein) Cummins. At her retirement, Doris was employed by the Oregon Board of Education as a 4th grade teacher at Coy School. Previously she taught school at Huron Elementary in Huron, OH and Southern Hills School in Dayton, OH. Mrs. Toppin and her husband Paul were the owners and operators of the East Side Sun Newspaper for over 40 years. Doris was a member of Salem United Methodist Church where she had been active in the Ladies Organization and the Missionary Association. Her memberships included the American Association of University Women (AAUW), Delta Kappa Gamma, Lotus Chapter Order of Eastern Star, East Toledo Club, Friends of Pearson Park, East Toledo Historical Society and the Oregon/Jerusalem Historical Society.
Surviving are her children, David (Lois) Toppin, Hilton Head, SC, James (Janet Traub) Toppin, Whitehouse, OH and Joy (Charles) Melvin, Cedarburg, WI; grandchildren, Kimberly (Richard) Henderson, London, England and Jonathon Toppin, San Francisco, CA and Emily and Jeffrey Melvin, Cedarburg, WI; brother, Calvin (Doris) Cummins; great granddaughter, Ella Henderson. Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Paul V. Toppin; sister, Olive Warns; brother, Dale Cummins.
Friends and family may visit at the Eggleston Meinert Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Rd., on Sunday, March 2, 2008 from 2-9 pm. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home on Monday at 1:00 pm with interment following in Historic Woodlawn Cemetery. Memorial contributions in Doriss memory may be made to Salem United Methodist or Friends of Pearson Metropark.
