Edmond H. Hammitt, 93, of Elmore, Ohio, passed away Sunday, January 21, 2018 at Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky. Edmond was born in Brooklyn, New York on August 14, 1924 to William and Martha (Franz) Hammitszch. He attended Pratt Art School in Brooklyn for two years. Edmond enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific Theater for three years, participating in several campaigns, including the invasion of Palau, Leyte in the Philippines, and Okinawa. When the Navy discovered he was an artist, they sent him to Navy Diesel School in Cleveland. Ed captured actual battle scenes through pencil sketches that are on display in the Eisenhower Museum. After he was discharged, Edmond went on to work as a draftsman and designer. He was employed by Scholz Homes, and was self-employed and in partnership with architect, Nelson Thal, before retiring in 1989. He also served many years as an elder at Grace Evangelical Church in Oregon, Ohio. In his free time, he enjoyed camping, biking, swimming, and painting with oils and acrylic medium. Several years ago, he had the privilege of participating in an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. Edmond is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Betty Jean Hammitt; children, Randy (Sandy) Hammitt, Gary (Gail) Hammitt and Denise (John) Alt; grandchildren, Randy Hammitt Jr., Nathan and Gabriel Alt, and Aaron and Matthew Hammitt; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Raymond Hammitt.
The family will receive friends at the Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Millbury Chapel, 1111 Woodville Road (east of I-280) on Wednesday, January 24, 2018 from 2:00 – 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will begin in the funeral home on Thursday, January 25 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Williston Cemetery with MilitaryHonor presentation. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be directed to the Residential Benefit Fund in care of the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky, Ohio.
