Edward M. Schweizer, 68 of Oregon, Ohio passed away Wednesday, August 30, 2006 in St. Charles/Mercy Hospital. Ed was born in Toledo on February 17, 1938 to Erwin and Gertrude (Schmidlin) Schweizer. Mr. Schweizer was the owner and operator of Schweizer's Fruit Farm and Greenhouse. He was a life member of First St. John Lutheran Church where he served as a deacon and a member of the church council where he was a past vice president. Edward served for over 42 years on the Oregon Volunteer Fire Department at fire station #1 where he served as chief for many years. His memberships included being a member and past president and board member of the Lucas County Farm Bureau, Lucas County ASC, the horticultural advisory board at Penta County Technical School, both the Lucas County Fire Chief's Association and the Northwest Ohio Volunteer Fireman's Association, Toledo Area Flower and Vegetable Growers Association, Ohio Vegetable and Potato Growers Association, Ohio Fruit Growers Association, Ohio Florist's Association, Lucas County Young Farm Couples Committee, the Landmark Advisory Board, both the Oregon Fire Department and Lutheran Men's Bowling Leagues, Fresh Directions of Northwest Ohio and The Oregonians, Toledo Chamber of Commerce, Oregon Jerusalem Historical Society, Past President of the Ohio State University Horticultural Society, Life member of the Ohio State Alumni Association . He was also a charter member of the St. Charles/Mercy Hospital's Wall of Fame.
Surviving are his loving wife, Verlene; daughters, Linda (Tim) Yenrick and Pamela Schweizer; sons, William (Mary Jo) and Michael Schweizer; sisters, Virginia (Jerry) Nissen and Barbara (Jim) Badowski; grandchildren, William, Leigh and Anne Yenrick, Jacob and Faith Schweizer. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Family and friends may visit at the Eggleston Meinert Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Rd. at Starr Avenue on Thursday from 5 to 9 pm and Friday from 2 to 9 pm. Oregon Fire Department services will be Thursday at 7:30 pm. Funeral services will begin in the funeral home on Saturday at 12:15 and proceed to First St. John Lutheran Church for services at 1:00 pm. Interment will follow in St. John Cemetery. The family suggest memorial contributions be made to First St. John's, Oregon V.F.D. or the charity of the donor's choice.
