Elizabeth Ann Kochan, 92, passed away peacefully in her home, surrounded by her family, on January 4, 2007 after a struggle with cancer. She was born in Czechoslovakia on December 22, 1914 to John and Mary (Koscho) Soltis. At the age of 14 she made the voyage with her brothers to America on the Queen Mary. After a brief stay at Ellis Island, they traveled to Toledo to stay with relatives. Betty started working almost immediately doing various jobs. During World War II she worked at the Auto Lite as a Rosie the Rivetor. She then worked at Libbey Owens Ford Glass Company for 25 years, retiring in 1977 at the age of 62. After retiring, Betty devoted her life to her family. She took great pride in her grandchildren and great grandchildren to whom she was known as Baba. She was always there to help and lovingly encourage their endeavors. Baba will be missed with loving memories. Betty was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, for over 60 years, and its Rosary Altar Society, the U.T.U. Ladies Auxiliary and the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association.
Baba leaves behind to cherish her memory her daughter, Nancy (Vern) Champion; grandchildren, Cynthia (Mark) Martin, David (Allison) Champion and Penny (Andi) Echler; great grandchildren, Amanda (Justin) Clampitt, Brandon and Cassandra Champion, Andrew, Alexandrea, Elizabeth, Lillian and Christopher Echler. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Victor Paul Kochan, and her brothers and sisters.
There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at St. Patrick of Providence Church, 14010 U.S. Rt. 24, Grand Rapids, OH on Friday, January 12, 2007 at 3 p.m. Eggleston Meinert Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, is assisting in arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Betty's family extends a special thanks to Hospice and all the nurses for their special care of Betty and her family, especially nurse Kathy Gerace.
