Elizabeth Sophie Farkas, 90, passed from this world with her Savior Jesus Christ to once again walk beside her loving husband John Farkas on Friday, February 7, 2014. Elizabeth was born on July 9, 1923 in Detroit, MI, to loving parents Joseph and Mary Ponsock. Her siblings Theresa and Joe were soon joined by sister RoseMary. During the Depression, they moved to Albany, Louisiana, to work on their strawberry farm. The Farkas family owned a neighboring farm and that'™s where Elizabeth fell in love with John Farkas. They were married on July 27, 1940 in Albany and shared 62 wonderful years together. When John was drafted into the Army, Elizabeth followed him throughout the US until he was shipped overseas. After the war, John decided he did not want to farm any more and moved to Toledo along with his parents. John and Elizabeth purchased their home on Front Street and raised their twin daughters, Barbara Ann and RoseMary. Elizabeth loved being a homemaker and her Hungarian cooking/baking was beyond compare. She loved to sew and for a time was able to join Mother'™s Club at Birmingham School. She started working outside the home at Balogh Cleaners. Later, she was employed at Major Laundry & Rental and was a supervisor until she retired. Some summers were spent vacationing back in Louisiana visiting her parents and extended family. Later RoseMary married Howard Cook and Barbara Ann married Raymond Fisher. The family grew and every Sunday afternoon was spent at Front Street. Following church and a delicious meal the cards were brought to the table and the games began. Tiffany Lynn and Justin Howard completed the family. It does take a village to raise a child and it was very evident in the Farkas/Cook/Fisher household. Vacations were spent together and trips to the lake to enjoy the Senior Cooks'™ cottage. A closer knit family could not be found. Soon Tiffany and Justin graduated from college and it was time to turn another chapter in life. Tiffany moved to North Carolina and upon returning home for vacations, shared many exciting stories with Grammie from her work in Child Protective Services. Justin married Shannon M. Jourdain and just when Elizabeth thought God had given her all her blessings, a great-granddaughter was born-Addison J. Cook, who dearly loved her 'œGrammie Bosz.' Elizabeth cherished her family and always attended family functions and celebrations. After the passing of the love of her life, Elizabeth'™s health also resulted in some challenges. The family home was sold and Elizabeth began the next phase in her life residing at Heartland of Oregon. She enjoyed the activities- especially Bingo- and was affectionately referred to as 'œQueen Elizabeth.' Monday evenings were spent remembering old times on the phone for hours with sister RoseMary in Baton Rouge, La. Elizabeth loved Calvin United Church of Christ and attended faithfully until her health did not permit it. 'œAnd her children will bow down and called her blessed.'
Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John; sister, Theresa Ardoine; brother, Joe Ponsock and his wife Thelma Ponsock. She is survived by her sister RoseMary (Rainey) Brown; sisters-in-law, Julia Balogh and Dorothy Farkas; along with many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to especially thank the nurses and aides at Heartland for their devoted care of Elizabeth. We cannot fully express to you how much it meant to us to know that she was cared for like family. You were all so thoughtful and considerate of our mother and she loved you all dearly. We only wish that we could name you each individually and give you the thanks you deserve. We could not have asked for more caring and loving women to help our mother. We pray God blesses each and every one of you. Terri and Deb, we will miss your smiling faces and tender words of compassion. Many thanks also to Hospice of Heartland who helped at a time when difficult decisions needed to be made and pain care needed to be managed.

The Watcher: She always learned to watch for us, Anxious if we were late. In winter by the window, In summer by the gate. And though we mocked her tenderly, Who had such foolish care. The long way home seemed more safe, Because she waited there. Her thoughts were all so full of us She never could forget And so I think that where she is She must be waiting yet. Waiting till we come home to her Anxious if we are late Watching from Heaven'™s window Leaning on Heaven'™s gate.
