IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Elizabeth "Liz" Mary
Herbst
November 11, 1927 – March 17, 2023
Elizabeth "Liz or Lizzy" Mary (Rosa) Herbst, a 63 year resident of Curtice, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 17, 2023 at Ohio Living Swan Creek in Toledo, Ohio. She was 95. Born, November 11, 1927 at home on the family farm in Henrietta Township, Lorain County, Ohio to Clyde Haden Rosa and Mary J. (Titus) Rosa, she attended and graduated from Birmingham School in 1944, played violin and was a cheer leader for the basketball team. She picked and sold apples on her grandfather's farm as a young lady, and after graduation, worked in The Lorain County Savings & Trust in Elyria. She married Robert Louis Herbst in the Birmingham Methodist Church on December 1, 1951, and they lived in Amherst, Ohio until moving to Curtice, Ohio in 1958.
Liz centered her life around her family, her home and gardens, neighbors, friends and Christ United Methodist Church. She loved life - to visit, entertain, play games, sew, cook, sing, bake, tend her beautiful gardens, travel, camp, swim, bird watch and was a voracious reader and diligent record keeper! She also loved her church family, and was a devoted member for many years in the choir, on the Board, as regional President of the United Methodist Women, doing mission work, managing the church kitchen, volunteers and functions, organizing meals for Helping Hands of St. Louis Soup Kitchen, volunteering for Mobile Meals and on the Executive Board for the Friendly Center of Toledo.
In her mid-50's, Liz returned to school and received an Associate Degree from Owens Technical College. She went to work with her new computer skills as a temporary and then full time at Davis Besse Nuclear Power Plant as a Records Manager. She worked for 8 years proudly never missing one day of work, retiring in 1993 at age 66. More adventures, traveling and visiting her family in Utah at Christmas time each year became new joys.
She is survived by her son, Jeffrey of Curtice; daughter and son-in-law, Judith and Warren Klautt; grandson, Dylan Klautt all of Midway, Utah; sister, Ruth (Rosa) Schurr of Fisher, PA; many nieces, nephews and their families and friends whom she loved. She was preceded in death by her parents, loving husband of 55 years, Robert L. Herbst and brothers, sisters-in-law Charles and Shirley Rosa, and Paul and Jerene Rosa.
A celebration of her life will be held on Monday, March 27, 2023 at Christ United Methodist Church, 5757 Starr Ext., Oregon, Ohio with visitation from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 12:00 p.m. Interment will follow in Oakwood Cemetery in Curtice.
