Obituary

Elmer Nelson Habegger, 90 years, of Oregon, OH passed away Thursday, August 31, 2006, at St. Charles/Mercy Hospital. Mr. Habegger was born in East Toledo to Peter and Lena (Moeffert) Habegger on July 15, 1916. Mr. Habegger was a lifelong farmer and owned a commercial greenhouse in Jerusalem Township. He was raised on Grasser Street in Oregon and attended Brandville School. In 1926 the family moved to the farm on Corduroy Road where Mr. Habegger spent the majority of his life. He was a member of First St. John Lutheran Church. In 1941 Mr. Habegger joined the Army Air Corp. In January 1942 he sailed from San Francisco enroute to the Philippine Islands; later the convoy was rerouted to Australia. There he served with the 13th Bomb Squadron, 3rd Group in the Fifth Air Force as an aviation ordnance man. As a Sergeant, Mr. Habegger received five Bronze Stars. He participated in five battles and campaigns in the East Indies/Asia, Papua, New Guinea, Northern Solomon Islands, and the Bismarck Archipelagos. He received the Army Presidential Unit Citation at Port Moresby, New Guinea in 1942. Later in life he served as a member and trustee of the 5th Air Force Memorial at Wright Patterson Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio. He was also a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Post 2510 in East Toledo. Surviving are his loving wife, Eleanor; son, David (Diane) Habegger and daughter, Sandy (Tom) Garverick; grandchildren Steven (Amy), Michelle, and Kristin Habegger, and Kevin Garverick; sisters, Mildred Panning and Ruth (Don) Mallett, sister-in-law Shirley (Earl) Warnke, sister-in-law Dorothy Habegger, brother-in-law Bruce Waters, in addition to many nieces and nephews. Mr. Habegger was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Edna (Christy) Blough, Hilda (Edward) Pollex, Lillian Habegger, Virginia Waters and brothers, Harold (Zalia) and Edward (Bob) Habegger. Family and friends may visit at the Eggleston Meinert Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Rd. at Starr Avenue on Sunday from 12 to 8 pm. Funeral services will be held on Monday beginning at 11 am at First St. John Lutheran Church with the family present at 10 am. Interment will take place Tuesday at 11 am at Williston Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to First St. John Lutheran Church, 2471 Seaman Street, Toledo, OH. Visitation: Visitation Times Sunday, 12:00 - 8:00 p.m. Oregon Chapel
