Obituary

Esther Louise Hoffman, 106, passed away on Friday, November 2, 2012 at Lutheran Home at Toledo under the care of Hospice of Northwest Ohio and her Lutheran Home at Toledo caregivers. Esther was born the oldest of four siblings on April 6, 1906, in Riga Township, near Blissfield, Michigan, to Herman Ferdinand and Frieda Ricka (Mueck) Pieplow. She attended Blissfield schools and Tri State Business College in Toledo. Esther was employed by NuWay Stretch (Suspender) Co. in Adrian, Michigan, as a billing clerk where she was called 'œole eagle eye' by her coworkers. Upon her marriage to Otto Albert Hoffman on December 11, 1937, in Blissfield, and honeymoon to California, they began married life at 438 Navarre (Toledo) in the home his father had built. They were married 40 years prior to her husband'™s death on January 16, 1978. She remained in their home for a total of 65 years. They shared a love of family, friends, and traveling throughout the US and Canada. Esther was an active member of St. Mark Lutheran Church, spending many hours with her sewing group making quilts and lap robes for the soldiers and 'œolder folk'. She loved traveling and dining with her friends in the Senior Adult Group at St. Mark Lutheran Church. Esther loved corresponding with family and friends, and continued with their surviving families. Besides sending cards and notes, Esther enjoyed playing cards, bingo, bunco, and kings-in-the-corner. Esther Hoffman loved her Lord and Savior, and sought to live the scripture Philippians 4:11-12, being content in all stages of her life. She was a wonderful example of a well-lived life to all of us Besides her husband and parents, Esther was preceded in death by her brother, Norman (Dorothy) Pieplow, Dorothy (Lee) Scully, and Adeline (Ernie) Johnson. Although having no children of her own, Esther was a favorite with her many nieces and nephews, and continuing generations of family. Esther was fond of Ott'™s family as her own. She had a sharp mind and keen wit, and was a wealth of knowledge on family history. Friends may call at the Lutheran Home at Toledo Chapel, 131 N. Wheeling Street, Toledo, on Monday, November 5th from 2:00-5:00 pm. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 am Tuesday, November 6th at St. Mark Lutheran Church, 611 Woodville Road, Toledo. Private interment will take place at Historic Woodlawn Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy in Esther'™s name may be directed to St. Mark Lutheran Church, Hospice of Northwest Ohio, or the Lutheran Home at Toledo Activities Department. The family wishes to thank the staff and volunteers at the Lutheran Home, St. Mark Lutheran Church, Hospice of Northwest Ohio, her tablemates, Dorothy, Mary and Phyllis, and Duane Chojnacki, Debbie Belkofer, and so many others for the consideration and attention you provided. Our deepest gratitude goes to Tyrone Jones, her exceptional caregiver who brought joy to Esther and others with his love, compassion and enthusiasm for his profession.
