Esther Lenora (Bourdeon) Rajner, 91, widow of Andrew F. Rajner, Sr. and longtime resident of the Birmingham neighborhood in East Toledo, died Monday, November 20, 2017 at the Glendale assisted living facility in Toledo. She was born in Latcha, Wood County, Ohio on October 14, 1926 to Edward Sr. and Lena (Schwartzwalder) Bourdeon, and graduated from Lake Township High School in 1945. She later worked at the Lasalle's and J. C. Penney department stores.
While working at Lasalle's in downtown Toledo, she met Andy when he drove an airport limousine route from downtown to the former Municipal Airport near her home; her statement at the time was "I am going to marry that man!". And she did so at Holy Rosary parish in 1947; a total of seven children were born to the happy couple. After their wedding, they resided in Andy's family home on Milford Street until 1953 when they built a new home just one block away, living there until 2011 when they moved to the Kingston Residence in Perrysburg. When their 67 years of joyful marriage closed with Andy's passing in 2014, Esther returned to Milford Street for a year, then moved to the Glendale in 2015. After serving in the Merchant Marine during World War II, Andy sailed the Great Lakes for 30+ years, rising to become a ship's captain for the Oglebay-Norton line. And as the captain's wife, Esther was able to accompany him on some of his trips, but at other times he would be away from home for extended periods. She often said her proudest achievement was raising their children – and sometimes being both mother and father. But the best times were when Andy's ship would dock in or near Toledo so that each homecoming – no matter how short or long – allowed the entire family to be together; this was especially nice during the annual winter lay-up periods as the ships often wintered over in Toledo.
As was true for most of the extended Rajner family, Andy and Esther were long time members of Holy Rosary parish until its closure in 2005; they then transferred to St. Ignatius parish in Oregon. Active with Andy in the International Ship Masters Association, she also loved her bingo and an occasional outing to the casino. She was an avid bowler, and about half of the members of the mom-and-pop league were members of the Rajner clan; she made sure that all were well-fed at her home after each Sunday afternoon match, and on holidays. She and Andy loved to travel over the winter – to Arizona and Florida many times, and to Hawaii once.
Esther was preceded in death by her parents; sister Mary Bartlett; brothers Edward Jr. and Oliver Bourdeon; husband Andrew, Sr.; infant twin daughters Mary Jean and Mary Jane Rajner; and daughter Janice Fuller. She is survived by her daughter Diane (J.P.) Smith; sons Andrew Jr., David (Cheryl), and Allen (Lisa) Rajner; son-in-law Thomas Fuller; sister-in-law Mary Bourdeon; 16 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the Eggleston-Meinert-Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Road on Saturday, November 25, 2017 from 4:00 pm until time of funeral service at 7:00 pm. Private interment will be in St. Ignatius Cemetery. The family wishes to thank staff members of the Glendale and of Great Lakes Caring Hospice for their loving care. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to St. Ignatius Parish are suggested.
To Mom and Dad: you are together once again, and you both will remain forever in our hearts.
