Esther A. Van Scoy, 88, of Toledo, OH passed away Sunday, January 29, 2006 in the Lutheran Home at Toledo. She was born in Willard, OH on April 24, 1917 to William and Aleda (Landefeld) Mehl. Esther attended Willard High School and was inducted into the Willard High School Athletic Hall of Fame. She then attended Capital University where she was homecoming queen in 1938, and then graduated in 1939 with a degree in English education. Esther met her husband, Rennix, there in 1936 and they married in August of 1943. Esther was a conscientious teacher and taught at Willard High and Woodward High in Toledo. She thoroughly enjoyed being a minister's wife to her husband Rev. Rennix L. VanScoy who served at many Lutheran churches throughout Ohio, including St. Mark and St. James in Toledo. Esther served on many committees and charitable organizations, including St. Luke's Hospital Auxiliary. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend of many.
Surviving are her husband, Rev. Rennix L. VanScoy; sons, Rennix M. and Martin A. (Nadine); daughter, Rhoda (James W.) Hess and granddaughter, Aleda M. Hess.
She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Ruth Mehl.
Visitation will be in St. John's Lutheran Church, 708 S. Erie St., Toledo, OH 43609 on Wednesday, February 1, 2006 from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11:30 a.m. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Willard, OH. Expressions of sympathy in Esther's memory can be made to the Lutheran Home of Mercy, Williston or St. John's Lutheran Church. Esther's family sincerely thanks the Lutheran Home at Toledo for their tender care of her. Arrangements are being handled by the Eggleston Meinert Pavley Funeral Home, Coy Road Chapel, 440 S. Coy Road.
