Obituary

Ethel Korn Rideout died on Thursday, December 3, 2015, at Hospice of NW Ohio. Ethel was born on November 21, 1916 to Joseph and Minnie (Petersen) Korn and just marked her 99th birthday. Ethel moved to LanePark of Oregon in July from Bayberry Place, her home for 17 years.. Ethel was a 1934 graduate of Lake HS where she played basketball with a team that was undefeated. She remained in contact with her classmates and was one of the last 3 surviving members. Ethel and her husband of 53 years, Isaac, raised their family in the home near Millbury that had been built by her father and brothers in the late 1920s. There they often hosted friends and family. Their large garden was not only a source of food for canning, but also for sharing with friends and those less fortunate. Ike died in January, 1990. Ethel worked in the Lake School cafeteria for 25 years retiring in 1978. She spent many of those years at the Millbury Elementary building. She was an active lifelong church member, singing in choirs and trios with her daughters. She taught Sunday School classes at Bethany Methodist for many years. Often when camping with the Lake Twp. Goers Camp Club, she would prepare Bible stories, crafts and music to share with the kids around the campfire on Sunday mornings. First St. John Lutheran has been her church home since 1986. She was a past president of Esther Circle and a current member of Miriam Circle and the quilters group, sewing quilts for the needy in the U.S. and abroad. She was an extensive traveler beginning with a 7x7 tent in the 1950s before graduating to their Airstream. Ethel and Ike were a past President and First Lady of the Toledo Unit of Airstream, WBCCI. In ¬1977 they traveled to Pakistan to visit their son and family who were with the International School in Islamabad. She treasured their unique experiences from that time. When they began spending more time in Florida than at home in Ohio, she and Ike bought a home in The Villages where they golfed and entertained family from the north who came looking for hugs and warmer weather. Ethel's greatest joy came from family times. She played an active role in all her children's lives and activities. Her eight grandchildren treasure countless fun times with her, whether traveling, camping, or just overnights at Grandma's house. She never missed a chance to spend time with her eleven great-grandkids and they always looked forward to being with her, "Is Grandma 'Knockout'going to be there?" She loved music and seldom missed an Olivet Bell Choir concert directed by her daughter Carol. The harmonies of the Gaithers filled her home. She enjoyed sporting events on TV, especially those Detroit Tigers, and their TV game schedule was kept close at hand so she wouldn't miss a game. She will be deeply missed by son, Ray Rideout (Michael Cooper) of Wilton Manors, FL, daughters, Betty Hyre (Charles) of Millbury and Carol Miller (James) of Sylvania; grandchildren: Beth Rideout (Ronn Weber) and Curt Rideout (Paula Fekken) of Traverse City, MI, Tracy Burroughs, of Royal Oak, MI, Brad Hyre (Chastity) of Highland, IL, Matt Hyre (Wendy) of St. Paul, MN, Paige Hyre, Jeni Liaros (Nick) and Elizabeth Miller of Sylvania, OH; great-grandchildren, Noah, Alyssa, Seth, Aleeah, Alisa, Reegan, Ben, Will, Isaac, Sophia and Kalysta. Also survived by sisters-in-law, Evelyn and Lois Korn. Along with her husband Ike and former daughter-in-law Maxine Rideout, she was preceeded in death by her parents and brothers Merl, Louis, Bill, Merritt and Dale Korn and sisters, Fern Lilje and Viola Zeller. Visitation will be Sunday, December 20, from 2-7 at Eggleston Meinert Pavley Funeral Home, 440 S. Coy Road, Oregon, OH. A celebration of her life will be held on Monday, December 21 at 2 p.m. at First St John Lutheran Church, 2471 Seaman Road, Toledo, 43605. There will be a private burial at Lake Twp. Cemetery.
