Frederick R. Klatt, 88, of Toledo, Ohio and long time resident of Point Place, died April 17, 2003 at Toledo
Hospital. Fred was born February 14, 1915 to Ludwig and Bertha (Klawitter) Klatt. He graduated in 1933 from
Waite High School. Fred was preceded in death by his parents and 3 brothers, Louis, Carl and Richard, all of
Toledo. On June 1, 1946 he married Alma Betcher at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, where they continued to be
members. They had two children, Kay and Barry. Fred worked many years in the grocery business, starting out
at Klatt's Market on Buckeye Street in the north end. When that store closed because of the I-280 expressway being built, Fred went to work at Leydorf's Supermarket on Broadway in South Toledo until it closed. From there, Fred went to work with his brothers at Saveway Red & White, also on Broadway. He was later joined in the grocery store by his son, Barry, and worked many years until his retirement in 1988. After retirement, Fred enjoyed going to the many school activities and sporting events that his grandchildren were involved in. He was their #1 fan. Fred was a member of G.B.U., one of the 7 German Societies at Oak Shade Grove. Fred enjoyed
polka dancing with his wife and loved working at the German American Festival. He liked working in the yard
and especially enjoyed feeding the birds.
Fred is survived by his wife of 56 years, Alma; daughter, Kay (Dave) Watrol; son, Barry (Pam); grandchildren,
Melanie Watrol and Jason and Heather Klatt.
