Gabriel G. Bertok, 86, of Oregon, OH passed away November 13, 2003 in his home, surrounded by his loving and devoted family. He was born in Toledo, OH on June 22, 1917 to Julius and Priscilla (Lengel) Bertok. Gabriel was an Aviation Engineer Officer in the US Navy for 30 years, serving during World War II and retiring as a Lieutenant in 1967. Gubby's many memberships included the Tail Hook Association, Naval Aviation Association, TRA-Life member, Naval Air Transport Service, USS Arizona Reunion Group, VFW 4906, Port Lawrence, Fleet Reserve Association, Masonic, Past Master of Shoreline Lodge, Scottish Rite 32nd Degree Mason, Zenobia Shrine Temple, Cryptic Masons, California Royal Arts Mason, CA, Knights Tempeler of CA and the High Twelve Club of Toledo. George received the Fifty Year Golden Veteran's Award for outstanding service to Masonry in 1994 and in 1995 George received the Hiram Award from the Mason's in California. He was a lifelong member of Calvin United Church of Christ and a Birmingham Hall of Fame Inductee.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years Beatrix "Bea"; daughter, Gay Nixon; very special granddaughter, Christine Paiz and her husband Michael who was more like a son to George than a grandson- in-law; granddaughter, Kim and her children, Christopher and Brittany; granddaughter-in-law, Gwen and George's very special "little girl" Mariah; sister, Sarah Porter and sister-in-law, Donna Bertok many loving and devoted nieces and nephews and their spouses. Gubby is also survived by his "church family". Gubby was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Beatrix Marquez; brothers, Julius, Paul and William Bertok and sister, Priscilla Toth and great-grandson, Michael Cameron Paiz.
Family and friends may visit at the Eggleston-Meinert-Pavley Funeral Home, Coy Road Chapel, 440 S. Coy Road, Oregon, OH on Sunday, November 16, 2003 from 1 until 8 p.m. where a VFW service will be held at 7 pm. Funeral services will be conducted on Monday at 11 am in Calvin United Church of Christ. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Gabriel's memory can be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio or Calvin United Church of Christ.
