A man who selflessly gave of himself for others, Gene R. Saevig, 80, of Toledo, passed away Friday, October 22, 2010, at the Lutheran Home at Toledo with his children by his side. Born in Stoughton, Wisconsin, on August 31, 1930 to Jacob and Ada Saevig, Gene was employed by the Gulf Oil Corporation for nearly 25 years, retiring in 1980. He then went to work for AAA of Northwest Ohio for 15 years.
A natural tenor, Gene helped form the Sons of Harmony barbershop quartet as a high school student in Wisconsin and was a past member of the Seaway Commanders of Harmony Chorus and SPEBSQSA. He honorably served in the United States Navy during the Korean War and attended the University of Toledo where he majored in accounting. Gene was active in various organizations including the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite-Rubicon where he was a 32 Degree Mason, as well the Maumee Elks Lodge, the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Maumee and the Scandinavian Club of Toledo.
A member of Bethel Lutheran Church, he previously served as an elder at First St. John Lutheran Church in Toledo.
Gene'™s greatest accomplishment was lovingly nurturing his children after the death of his wife, Donna, at the age of 42 in 1974.
Gene is survived by his son, Dan (Dianne); daughter Susan (Jerri) Eckel of Louisville, Kentucky; granddaughter, Danielle Saevig; sweetheart of 30 years, Virginia Walsh; and sister, Shirley. He was preceded in death by his wife; parents, brothers Stanley and James; and sisters, Thelma and Irene.
Visitation will be held at Eggleston Meinert Pavley Funeral Home, 440 S. Coy Road in Oregon on Monday, October 25, 2010 from 3-9 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted in the funeral home on Tuesday, October 26, 2010 at 11 a.m., with interment following in Forest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Gene and Donna Saevig Medical Mission Scholarship through the University of Toledo Foundation or Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
The family greatly appreciates the comfort and support provided by the excellent and compassionate staffs of the Lutheran Home at Toledo and Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
