George Earl Gerkensmeyer, 78, of Curtice, Ohio and formerly of Elmore, Ohio, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Tuesday, December 28, 2021 at Mercy St. Charles Hospital. George was born in Martin, Ohio on October 13, 1943 to Herman and Ruth (Walp) Gerkensmeyer. On June 6, 1964 he married Elaine "Cookie" Benefield. George was a supervisor at Chrysler for 39 years prior to his retirement. He was a member of St. Paul Trinity United Methodist Church in Elmore. He was a man who could do anything, as he built their family farm house in Elmore. George enjoyed raising many animals on his farm, especially enjoying raising chickens and turkeys. George was an avid golfer playing three times a week this past summer. He also enjoyed other sports as well, coaching his girls' softball teams. Most important to George was his family. He was always there for them whether watching sporting events, family get togethers or spending time with them on family vacations. Shortly after George and Cookie were married, tragedy struck their family. Cookie's mother and father where killed in an accident. George and Cookie, just briefly married brought into their new family Cookie's younger sisters to be part of their own. From that point on George and Cookie raised them as their own daughters.
Surviving are his loving wife, Elaine "Cookie"; daughters, Becky (Joe) Hoffman, Lori (Robert Dunlap) Witt, Kelly Matwiejczyk, Jennifer (Mike) Pasty; grandchildren, Alex, Madison, Makenzie Hoffman, Conner & Morgan Witt, Jacob, Grant & Zach Matwiejczyk, Vincent & Brooklyn Pasty; and sister, Carol Weaver. George was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, Jerry Matwiejczyk; brothers, Herman & Robert Gerkensmeyer; and sister-in-law, Shelia Jensen.
Visitation will be held at Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Millbury Chapel, 1111 Woodville Road, Millbury on Sunday, January 2, 2022 from 12 noon until 6:00 pm, where his funeral service will be held on Monday at 11:00 am. Interment will follow in Clay Township Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Donor's Choice.
