George W. Smith Sr., 85, of East Toledo, OH, passed away August 7, 2004, in Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Perrysburg. He was born on September 11, 1918, in Bucyrus, Ohio to George and Pearl (Case),Smith.
George graduated from Waite High School and Tri State College. He worked at A & P Supermarkets, was a self-employed contractor and worked for Willys-Overland, retiring from Jeep in 1987. He took great pride building wooden toys and crafts, and sold them as "Toys by George". He helped to start Cub Scout Pack 60 of the Boy Scouts of America at Navarre School in Toledo.
George married Florence MacWilliams on March 22, 1956, who preceded him in death on June 7, 2001. He also was preceded in death by his brother, Charles C. Smith on July 2, 2001. He is survived by his daughters, Elsie (Joe) Kopp, Debbie (Eric) Weinrich, Esther Thomasson and Etta Oakley; sons, John (Sally) Belcik, Tom (Kathy) Belcik and George (Carolyn) Smith Jr.; 18 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren, and sons, William and James Meredith, from a previous marriage.
Family and friends may visit at the Eggleston Meinert Pavley Funeral Home, Coy Road Chapel, 440 S. Coy Road, Oregon, OH, on Tuesday, August 10, 2004 from 1-4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. where funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday at 1 p.m. Interment will follow in Toledo Memorial Park. Expressions of sympathy in George's memory can be made to Clark Street United Methodist Church. Special thanks to Hospice of NWO for making his final days peaceful.
