Obituary

Anne McLaughlin Jenkins made a difference during her 95 years. She was unwavering in her love for family, dedicated to her countless students, and steadfast in her faith. Anne died on Jan. 17, 2026, at Ohio Living Swan Creek in Toledo, after a long life of being very generous with her love, her wit, and her desire to live a worthwhile life. She was born March 11, 1930, in Butler, Pa., to Clarence and Gertrude (Harbison) Leppert. She grew up during the depression with four siblings, but said she always had plenty to eat and a comfortable home. Her family moved to Toledo in 1947, and she graduated from Libbey High School. Anne's life was forever changed a year later when she met George McLaughlin (affectionately known as Pudge) on a blind date. He was a baseball player, with blond hair and blue eyes. "What was not to like - actually in my case, to love," she often recalled over the years - one of many stories she would regale her family with about their passionate marriage. They married on Dec. 2, 1949, and had their first child, Frank nine months and eight days later. Within four years, there were three more children, Trudy and twins Mary Beth and Marian. Another of Anne's favorite stories was the day she confessed to Pudge her deep desire to teach school. He supported her dream and promised to help with the kids. Anne went on to earn her teaching degree cum laude in 1968 from the University of Toledo. She started out teaching fourth grade at Navarre Elementary in Toledo, then moved to fifth and sixth grades. She finished her career teaching math at East Toledo Junior High. Anne was one of those teachers who had a lasting impact in the lives of children in her classrooms. She was still receiving letters and visits from former students late in her life. "Anne was so instrumental in my life," one student recalled to her family. "Math was my specialty, because of your mom. I ended up with an engineering degree and made business my career. She definitely had an impact on so many lives." A teacher up to the end, as she jotted down notes for her obituary to her family, she apologized for ending one sentence with a dangling participle. Anne was also unfaltering in her faith in God and her dedication to her church, Eastminster Presbyterian Church in Toledo. Not one to approach anything half-heartedly, she was a rock in the congregation, and was the church organist for 28 years - refusing to accept pay for the role. Even as she weakened at the end of her life, she still had strong hands and a sturdy grip, undoubtedly from her lifetime of playing piano. Anne also taught Sunday school, Vacation Bible School, served as a trustee, deacon, and elder, with 20 years as clerk of session. She was a member of the women's association, directed the bell choir, children's choir and adult choir for many years. Anne loved to be involved. She was a member of Business and Professional Women, serving as president of the local and district groups, Oregon-Jerusalem Historical Society as trustee and president, and Mercy St. Charles Auxiliary as secretary and vice president. She was honored as a Martha Holden Jennings Scholar, Kappa Delta Pi educational honorary society, and BPW District Two Woman of the Year. While Pudge left behind beautiful pieces of woodwork, Anne will be remembered for her fine quilting skills, leaving countless pieces adorning beds and wall hangings. She shared her love of quilting by teaching classes at church and a local fabric shop. Pudge died on March 21, 2007, after 57 years of marriage. Five years later, on Valentine's Day, Anne married Ted Jenkins, a man she had known for years through church. They lived at Swan Creek, where they were quite involved in the retirement community. Anne often commented on being fortunate to find two good men to share her life with. Ted died on Sept. 13, 2019. Anne was also preceded by her siblings, Richard Leppert, Clarence Leppert, Thomas Leppert and Louise Myers, and her granddaughter, Jessica Aleksander Massey. She is survived by her four children: Frank (Jan) McLaughlin, Bowling Green; Trudy (John) Aleksander, Perrysburg Township; Mary Beth (Jerry) Wassum, Boerne, Texas; and Marian (Jerry) Gomoll, Oregon; her grandchildren: Tom (Raquel) McLaughlin, Los Angeles; Anne McLaughlin, Los Angeles; Elizabeth (Andrew Morency) Aleksander, Martin, Tenn.; Craig Morgan, Boerne, Texas; Rebecca Morgan, Boerne, Texas; Lori (Bryan) Herrick, Curtice; Matt (Julie) Gomoll, Oregon; Anna (Hunter Petermann) Walden, Kansas City; and Allie (Grant) Goodman, Providence, R.I.; and great-grandchildren: Leah Burket, Kylee Herrick, Madison Gomoll and Morgan Gomoll. In her notes, Anne mentioned that if she had a philosophy, it was this: "I shall pass through this world but once. Any good, therefore, that I can do for anyone, let me do it now. Let me not defer it or neglect it. For I shall never pass this way again." - by Stephen Grellet. Her message to family and friends was: "I have had a most wonderful life - filled with love of family, love of friends, a rewarding career, and talents which I tried to use wisely. Remember me lovingly, because I'll always love you and I will be waiting for you. Don't mourn!" A memorial service is planned for March 27 at 11 a.m., in the chapel at Ohio Living Swan Creek. In lieu of flowers, Anne asked that friends consider gifts made to Ohio Living Swan Creek.
