Gilbert Cervantez Guerrero, Sr., 86, of Toledo, Ohio passed away peacefully as he was taken by God on January 2, 2016. Gilbert was born on April 11, 1929 to Antonio and Juanita Guerrero in San Marcos, Texas. He graduated from Texas Military Institute and was a Veteran of the United States Marine Corps. His employment history included working at the Jeep plant and the Port Authority Docks. He went on to make his career at the U.S. Post Office where he provided 49 years of service. There, he worked as a clerk, a postmaster, E.E.O. Chairman, Affirmative Action District Manager and Civil Service test training administrator. He was also a Spanish/English interpreter and general investigator for a local law firm. Gilbert was a notary public also, the first and only Spanish speaking notary in the area during that time. He was very active in helping the community. He became a member of the University of Toledo Minority Scholarship Committee, a member of the Lucas County Democratic Party Central Committee and campaign manager, a member of the Advisory Committee on Mexican-American affairs, a member of the Toledo Police and Fire Human Relations Committee, a member of the Hispanic Caucus, the chairman of the "Spanish Speaking" Information center and a member of the NAACP. Gilbert was also a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church for 40 years. There, he was the head usher and served on the church council. He completed his Cursillo at the Divine Word Seminary and later became a member of the Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral Catholic Church.
He was married for 63 years to his loving wife, Lupita Velasquez Guerrero which he was preceded in death by, along with his two sisters and one brother, and grandson, Steven. He is survived by his four children, Andriana, Mario Sr., Joseph Sr. (Donna) and Gilbert Jr. (Chris). He is also survived by his grandchildren, two of which he raised, U.S. Army SSG Johnathan Guerrero, Sr., Mario Guerrero, Jr., along with Martin, Jimmy, Christopher, Nicolas, Mario C. Sr., Cristina V., Rosa Maria, Michael, Alexandria, Marleigh, Braelynn, Jesse M., Pedro J., Pablo J., Joseph Jr., Dana R. and Michael; also including 48 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren. Gilbert is also survived by his 3 sisters; 3 brothers and his Godchildren, Renee Bedee Johnson, Stacey Partridge and Nicolas V. Guerrero.
The "Patriarch of the Guerrero Family" was called home by God, but his strength, love and wisdom will remain with us forever, keeping his spirit alive, always in our heart and never forgotten. Family and friends may come to the Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Rd., on Thursday, January 7, 2016 from 2:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m where the Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will begin in the funeral home Friday at 10:00 a.m. and proceed to Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral for Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery. A gathering will be held at the Cathedral's hall immediately after the burial. The family asks that any contributions be made to the Guerrero Family.
