Obituary

Grace Elaine Leahy (Walter) passed away at her home December 16, 2015 with family members offering comfort. Grace was born October 13, 1926, in Toledo, Ohio. Grace was the 9th and last surviving child of Charles and Mabel Walter. Preceded in death by husband, Austin D. and son Dennis. Survived by daughter, Pamela Kurth; son, Michael (Patricia); daughter-in-law, Carol. Grace enjoyed 6 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren. Known for her love of family and friends, Grace never met a stranger and opened her home to any and all. In the 1960's her family involvement included chaperoning for the marching band, the Marilynettes, and traveling extensively appearing in competitions and parades, including many Macy's Day Parades with the highlight of marching in the inaugural parades of President John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. Grace undertook many hobbies throughout her life and approached each with gusto; candy-making, both chocolates and hard candies; ceramics, from making slip to curing in their own kiln. Grace was an Avon Lady never charging over cost to her many customers. Grace played lifeguard to her many grandchildren, using the large pool in their backyard as a springboard to competitive competition for her three oldest grandchildren. During her later years she made bead gifts and OSU and Michigan scarves for opposing fans in Toledo. Graces home always included an area dedicated to kids, including timeless toys from her own families childhood. Grace and Austin chaperoned "Point Place Teen Town" dances every Friday night during their children's mid-school years. For 17 years she worked as a teacher's aide in the Oregon schools, loving the role she played there. Her role as Grandma Grace to many children was multi-disciplined, one-on-one assistance, trouble shooter and just a comforting ear, listening and just being there when needed. Her mothering attributes included always being a presence in her three children's lives. Grace gave definition to mother by never letting family think that her job was too much or overwhelming.
