Rev. Harold Black, faithful servant of God, passed away peacefully Friday, August 19, 2022 surrounded by his family at Otterbein of Pemberville. Harold was born September 28, 1927 in Tionesta, Pennsylvania to Murl and Katherine (Long) Black. From 1945-1948, Harold served in the United States Navy. On October 22, 1954, he married the love of his life, Dorothy Cole. Pastor Harold served the United Methodist Church for over 60 years in congregations throughout Ohio including: Holland, Amsden, Bloomdale, and Deshler. He faithfully served the community of East Toledo at Oakdale, Salem, Clark Street, and Walbridge Grace. For 19 years, he served as chaplain at Camp Todimeca and in retirement was an associate pastor at Unity United Methodist Church where he volunteered countless hours to the food pantry and soup kitchen. Harold enjoyed camping with family and a good crossword puzzle.
Pastor Harold is survived by his wife of 67 years, Dorothy; grandchildren, Jodi (Randy) Deck, James Gears, and Justin Gears; great-grandchildren, Maddy, Ethan, Noah, and Faith; daughter-in-law, Rose Gears; siblings, Joan Fickel, Pat (Bill) Colter, Robert Black (Brigit), Marilyn (Don) Hughes; sister-in-law, Dee Holtfreter; beloved family friend of 54 years Dan and Mafelda DeLaVega of Santiago, Chile; along with many loving family members and friends. Preceded in death by parents; step-father, Clarence Holtfreter; daughter, Phyllis Gears; son-in-law, James Gears; and siblings, Gene (Joyce) Black, Chuck (Edna) Black, and Charlie Holtfreter.
Family will receive friends at the Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Road Wednesday, August 24, 2022 from 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm. Funeral services Thursday, August 25, 2022 at 10:30 am in the funeral home. Private interment: Eisenhour Cemetery. Preferred memorials: Unity United Methodist Church Food Pantry or Bridge Hospice.
