Helen L. Bahnsen
Grandma Purple
Helen L Plata , Passed away peacefully at Orchard Villa Care Center June 30, 2004. She was born August 10,
1921 in Morgantown, W. VA. to Merle & Marie DeVaughn. She was proud that the house she was born in is
now preserved as a National Historic Site as the oldest house in Monongalia County. Helen left Morgantown in
1940 for work in Toledo, but always considered Morgantown and the hills of W. VA., home. She worked at
Riverside Hospital during WWII ,and at Libbey Glass from the mid 40's to the mid 50's. From the mid 50's to
the mid 60's, she was a beautician at Clayte's beauty shop in the Old West End. Changing vocations one last
time, Helen returned to school to become an LPN and worked in many area nursing homes before she retired in
1982. Helen loved crocheting, bingo, the color purple, a good story and a good laugh. She especially loved her
family. She was always willing to listen and give her opinion. Family dinners will not be the same without her
stories and colorful comments.
Preceding her in death were her parents, her beloved son, Terry DeVaughn; sister Lucille Anistik; brother Harry
Buck DeVaughn; husbands, John Plata and Lester Bahnsen; Terry's father Michael McCourt and Linda's
