Helen Kigar, 85, passed away June 9, 2004 in Orchard Villa. She was born in Swan Creek Township, OH on January 21, 1919. Helen's early days were spent working on a farm with her father. She learned how to drive on a Ford Model T while delivering the Toledo Blade. Helen lived most of her life in East Toledo and met her match on September 25, 1937 when she married the late Melvin Kigar. They had 8 children and often boasted that their family holds the record of 8 children to graduate from Waite High School. Helen was active as Democratic 19th Ward chairperson and was president of the 19th Ward Women's Democratic Club. She was active in many issues over the years including replacing the railroad bridge on Fassett St. and the cleanup of the Unicast site. She received the Life Time Achievement Award from the Democratic Party in 1996. Helen worked for the A&P supermarkets where she was active in the United Food and Commercial Workers Union. She was a woman of straight forward candor and generous heart. To her belonged all the instincts and spiritual convictions of a born leader. In her later years Helen was an active member of Lemoyne Baptist Church.
Helen is survived by her children, Melvin (Lona) Kigar, Eleanor (Bill) Raetzke, Gary (Cheryl) Kigar, Janet Faust, Judy Opial, Beverly Lewis, Doug (Marcia) Kigar, Karen (Mohamed) Elwardeny; 18 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held on Friday, June 11, 2004 at 10:00 am in the Lemoyne Road Baptist Church, 25020 Bradner Rd., Genoa, OH with interment following in Lake Township Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by the Eggleston Meinert Pavley Funeral Home, Coy Road Chapel, 440 S. Coy Road, Oregon, OH. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider Lemoyne Baptist Church or the Dunberger Post Memorial Fund.
