Helen Louise "Skip" Bauer Mikesell, 91, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away quietly early Friday morning August 7, 2015 at her home. Helen was born September 23,1923 to Henry J. and Lillian (Walsh) Bauer in Austin, TX. After graduating Austin High School in 1941, she began her working career in the public library system in Austin and then Scarborough's Department Store in the credit/customer service department. She met Lieutenant William H."Bill" Mikesell, Army Air Corps, on a blind date. They were married in Austin, Texas on August 19, 1944.
Following the war, Helen and Bill returned to Toledo where they raised a family. Helen's career was reflected in her selflessness and kind heart. She filled her years with countless volunteer hours in numerous organizations. Her resume included President - Jerusalem School Mother's Club, founding leader - Girl Scout Troop 252, Girl Scout cookie Chairman, President - women's group - St. Luke's Lutheran Church, board of elections booth worker, rhythm band leader - Lutheran Home, extension service annual tree program volunteer, Member of the Board of Directors for the Lutheran Home. She was an expert seamstress, avid gardener, and experienced cook. Always a positive role model for her children and grandchildren, she remained humble and true to her faith. Many will say she passed away of a broken heart after losing the love of her life, Bill, one month short of their 71st wedding anniversary.
She will be sadly missed by daughters Helen Ann "Mikki" (John) Carlo and Sandra Sue (Sam) Denn; grandchildren, Kendra (Tony) Zadonia, Lindsey (Steve) Salens, Nathan (Mary) Denn and Nicholas Denn; great-grandchildren, William "Liam" Denn, Sarah Denn, and Owen Salens; nephews, William (Susan) Bauer and Jim (SueBeth) Bauer. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband; sister, Mary Bauer; brothers, Henry (Bea) Bauer, and Richard (Ruby) Bauer; and nephews, David Bauer and Robert "Bobby" Bauer.
Friends may call at the Eggleston Meinert & Pavley funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Road on Monday, August 10, 2015 from 3:00 pm - 8:00 pm. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, August 11, 2015 at 1:00 pm at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, 20 S. Yondota Road, Curtice, where the family will greet friends beginning at 12:00 pm. Interment will follow the service and luncheon in Toledo Memorial Park. Memorials may be directed to St. Luke's Lutheran Church.
