Helen J. (Galyas) Miller, of Oregon, Ohio passed away on Tuesday, April 5, 2011. She was born May 17, 1933 to John and Helen Galyas and grew up in the Birmingham neighborhood. She graduated in 1951 from Morrison R. Waite High School. Helen worked as a claim clerk and office manager for Dr. Carlisle Wilson in Erie, Michigan for 8 years. Previously she worked as an administrative secretary for the Toledo Health & Retired Extended Care and Council 46 AFSCME.
A self employed seamstress, Helen'™s favorite projects were making costumes for friends and family. The fire pit was one of her favorite places to relax and share time with her family. When the weather would cooperate this is where you would find her as she loved the outdoors.
A joy in her life was as a baton and tap instructor for 12 years. She was the Assistant Director for 5 years under Marilyn Krall of the Marilynettes and Sandusky Moose Majorettes and Director for 3. Helen led these corps as they marched in 2 inaugural parades for Presidents John F. Kennedy in 1961 and Lyndon Johnson in 1965. She also was Director of the Toledo Dorians Baton and Drum Corps for 8 years. Helen held the position of Secretary for the Otters, Inc., a non profit organization that supported the fight against MS. She was honored as Otter of the Year in 1978 for her service. Helen was well known for her ability to pull together a cook out, birthday party, picnic, or family reunion, or for any reason just to get-together. This gave her the distinction of being 'œParty Headquarters' where sloppy joes and chips would never touch the plate.
She is survived by sons, Randall (Mary), Ronald (Julie) and Russell and daughter, Ruth (Ed) Rheinbolt; grandchildren, Kelly (Scott), Jennifer, Daniel, Ronald (Cristen), Erin, Kelsey, Randy, Kayleigh and Michael; great grandchildren, Roderic and Nolan; brother, John (Henrietta) Galyas; brother-in-law, Jack Eff and sister-in-law, Janie Jacob. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, John and Helen Galyas; former husband, Virgil M. Miller.
