Henry E. VanGorder, 78, of Northwood, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 17, 2010 at home, surrounded by his loving family, after a brief but courageous battle with bone marrow cancer. Henry was the only child of Henry H. and Edna (Peden) VanGorder, born August 21, 1932 in Asheville, NC. He grew up in East Toledo, attended Franklin School, where his father was the principal, and graduated from Waite High School in 1950. He attended Wooster College before joining the US Air Force. He was stationed in England during the Korean War, working as an air traffic controller, when he met the love of his life, Maureen Solomon. They married in 1954 and moved to his next duty assignment in Germany. While stationed in Germany their first son was born.
Upon returning home with his young family Henry worked in retailing for several years. He worked for a building contractor during the construction of the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Plant and then served as the street commissioner for the City of Northwood, Ohio, retiring in 1993. Following his retirement he kept busy delivering busses for Tesco and then as a courier for Mercy Health Partners for several years
Henry was a life long member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church, where he served on countless boards and committees. He was a member of the VFW Post #2984, where he served on their Honor Guard. Henry always loved to spend time at the property, in Logan County, Ohio, that his family had owned for several generations. Working in his yard was a great enjoyment to him as well as looking after his beloved dog, Nick.
Henry was a hardworking, fun loving and devoted Christian man. Henry was the one person you could always depend upon for help. He helped with much of the ongoing work at the church, regularly assisted both of his sons in their household projects and was eager to be there for anyone who needed a helping hand. His ever-youthful humor always added such fun to any gathering. He will be greatly missed.
Henry was preceded in death by his parents and daughter-in-law, Johneen. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Maureen; sons, Steven (Robin) and Keith and grandchildren, Megan, Crystal (Ben) Lindsey, Melinda, Devin, Dawn and Kearah; great-grandchildren, Madison and Gracey Lindsey and Kowin VanGorder-Whisman.
