Howard Kolman Komives, 67, of Toledo passed away Sunday, March 22, 2009 at University of Toledo Medical Center. Butch, as he was fondly known, was born May 9, 1941 to Elizabeth (Koren) and Kolman Komives. He graduated from Woodward High School in 1960, where he was an All-City Basketball Player. Butch received an athletic scholarship to Bowling Green State University where he went on to play for the Falcons, becoming the number one scorer in the nation his senior year. After graduation, he was drafted by the New York Knicks of the National Basketball Association. Over a ten year period, Butch went on to play for the New York Knicks, the Detroit Pistons, the Buffalo Braves and the Kansas City Kings, until his retirement from the N.B.A. After his retirement from the N.B.A., he and his family moved to Boulder, Colorado where he purchased the franchises to five Wendy's Restaurants. He remained there for 10 years until he sold the business and returned to Toledo, where he spent the remainder of his life.
Surviving are his wife, Marcia E. Komives; son, Shane (Alicia) and grandsons, Keller and Quinn Komives; step-sons, David (Heidi) and Christopher (Kate) Cook, Kyle and Kane (Jackie) Kretzinger; step grandchildren, Kailee, Jamie and Katie Kretzinger sisters, Elizabeth Meinert and Julie Woods; Butch was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be held at Eggleston Meinert Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Road on Wednesday, March 25, 2009 from 2-8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted in the funeral home on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Lake Township Cemetery.
