Obituary

Howard R. Luffy Sr., 71, of Oregon, Ohio passed away June 14, 2006 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio with his loving family at his side. He was born on February 10, 1935 in Pittsburgh, PA. Howard's family moved to Toledo in the late 30's and resided on Oak Grove Place in west Toledo. He enjoyed sports and playing the saxophone. Howard served his country in the U.S. Army from 1953-1956, serving at Fort Devens in Shirley, MA. He worked for the Kroger Company after moving back to Toledo, for the Toledo Fire Department from 1963-1975, and loved being a firefighter.  He was presented the Award of Valor in 1971 for saving the life of a fellow fireman. Howard was a motor route carrier for the Toledo Blade for 22 years, and owned a number of taverns including Luffy's Irish Tavern on Lagrange St. and Luffy's Last Chance Saloon in Oregon. Howard was an active member of Cooley Canal Yacht Club for 32 years, serving as Commodore in 1986, and voted AYC Sportsman of the Year in 2004. He was an avid fisherman and golfer, with two holes in one to his credit. Howard enjoyed his trips to Myrtle Beach, but most of all loved spending time with his family.   Howard was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Margaret Biller, and his sister, Geraldine. He will be deeply missed by Nancy, his loving wife of 24 years; sister, Margie (Ken) Jewson; brother, Louis Biller; sons, Michael (Mary Ellen) Luffy, Howard (Karen) Luffy Jr., William (Lisa) Fisher; daughter, Penny (David) Krupp; 9 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.   Visitation will be at the Eggleston Meinert Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Road on Saturday, June 17, 2006 from 12 Noon 9 p.m. with funeral services at 2:00 p.m. Visitation will continue after the funeral service with  a Toledo firefighter Last Alarm Service at 7 pm and a CCYC memorial ceremony for past commodores at 7:30 pm. The family requests that any donations be sent to the Toledo Firefighters Museum or Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Howard's family would like to extend very special thanks to the angels of Hospice, who provided wonderful care both in his home and the Perrysburg facility.
